John, tell them what Propaganda Films was at that time.
John, at what point did you and Gary Ross discuss formats and aspect ratios, and what were the issues?

However, Schwartzman also found that it was essential to use the proper stop in anamorphic, since the poor performance of the lenses in wide-open conditions can not simply be compensated with fine-grain stocks.
Schwartzman points out, however, that Bay's definition of "close-focus" is an extreme one: "What he means is that he can't take a 75mm anamorphic lens and focus it down to 11 inches.
Schwartzman reports that his camera of choice was the Panavision Platinum, since its viewfinder offers his operators the brightest image possible.

Seabiscuit and Gary Ross and John Schwartzman and Les Tomita and Allan Padelford and Technocranes andWescam XR remote ...
Schwartzman's experience shooting action for Michael Bay came in handy here, and he turned to his key grip, Les Tomita, and Hollywood vehicle engineer Allan Padelford to build and configure the tools he would need to film at tracks, including California's Pomona and Santa Anita, New York's Saratoga, and Kentucky's Keeneland.
Schwartzman turned to Tomita to figure out what kind of cranes he would need, and he hired Padelford to build two camera vehicles to help the crew keep pace with the horses used in the movie, including six horses to represent Seabiscuit at different ages, situations, and POVs.
Schwartzman adds that because the production filmed these sequences at racetracks, various crew members were often a mile or more apart.

 American Cinematographer:
From the beginning, cinematographer John Schwartzman, ASC believed a digital intermediate (DI) for Seabiscuit was the perfect solution to a nagging problem.
As a self-described "huge proponent" of anamorphic, he thought that shooting in Super 35mm would enable him to create more dynamic camera moves, but he was reluctant to go with Super 35 because he knew the anamorphic blowup would likely yield a lesser-quality image.
Schwartzman's enthusiasm for a digital finish was matched by that of Seabiscuit director Gary Ross.

Amazon.com: DVD: Being John Malkovich (1999)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Malkovich himself is the film's pièce de résistance, riffing on his own persona with obvious delight and--when he enters his own brain via the portal--appearing with multiple versions of himself in a tour-de-force use of digital trickery.
I am sure you know the plot, and words wouldn't help to describe how original (and ingenious) it is. The film works on so many levels- it is a screwball comedy, an existential discussion of the nature of existence, a study of sexual identity, and a satire of the modern desire to "escape" from life.
John Malkovich gives the greatest performance of his carreer as a man fighting for his very soul.

When Bay was tapped to shoot his second Bruckheimer hit, "The Rock," Schwartzman had already created a name for himself in the commercial world, and was moving from smaller independent films into studiosponsored projects.
Bay, Schwartzman, gaffer Andy Ryan and key grip Les Tomita had to plan and accommodate tor a drastic change in light levels during the blastoff, not to mention the safety of expensive camera equipment.

When worlds collide: DP John Schwartzman practices shuttle diplomacy for Armageddon
Armageddon reunites many of the principal crewmembers from The Rock, Bay-Bruckheimer's action smash of 1996, including Schwartzman (a friend of the director long before Bay made his mark in TV commercials and feature films), chief lighting technician Andy Ryan, key grip Les Tomita, and rigging gaffer Jeff Soderberg.
Says Schwartzman, "The idea was to take the Armadillo into this landscape and show how small it was compared to the vastness of the asteroid.
After all this, Schwartzman's and Ryan's current assignment, Ed TV, a small-scale comedy about media manipulation from Apollo 13 director Ron Howard, should be a piece of cake.
