John Scofield (born December 26, 1951 in Dayton, Ohio) is an American jazz guitarist and composer, who played and eventually collaborated with Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, Medeski Martin and Wood, and other important artists.
Early on in life, Scofield's family relocated to the small, mostly rural location of Wilton, Connecticut; it was here that he discovered his interest in music.
Scofield is currently serving as an adjunct faculty member in the Jazz Department at New York University's Steinhardt School of Education.

John Scofield was lucky enough to be around during the first real wave of jazz/rock experimentation and to work firsthand with the musicians who helped jazz regain a footing in mainstream music: Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, George Duke, Billy Cobham, and the man who started it all, Miles Davis.
Scofield was an integral part of Miles' band during his comeback years in the 1980s, and his playing and compositions appear on three of Davis' recordings from that time.
Scofield takes much of the credit for this, taking off into jams that are technically challenging and trippy, but never losing sight of the groove, which his band lays down wonderfully.

While one finds little reason to fault Scofield for following what is a successful formula for other artists in a jazz-hostile music industry, his claim of "taking jazz to new places" seems more a marketing ploy than a legitimate statement of ideology.
As for his mentor, this record seems to be something the Davis of the '80s would be sooner to endorse than would the leader of the wildly experimental Afro-funk records of the mid-'70s.
