On 20th September 1944, during the Battle of Arnhem, Lance Sergeant Baskeyfield was the nco in charge of a six-pounder anti-tank gun at Oosterbeek.
During a brief respite after the engagement Lance Sergeant Baskeyfield refused to be carried to the Regimental Aid Post and spent his time attending to his gun and shouting encouragement to his comrades in neighbouring trenches.
Finally when his gun was knocked out Lance Sergeant Baskeyfield crawled under intense enemy fire to another six-pounder gun nearby, the crew of which had been killed and proceeded to man is single handed.

On 20th September, 1944 at Arnhem, Holland, Lance Sergeant Baskeyfield was in charge of a six pounder anti-tank gun and in the course of the engagement when two tanks and at least one self-propelling gun were destroyed, the Lance Sergeant was wounded and all his crew became casualties.
He was Knight of the Order of St. John.
Additional information: He was the son of a Chartered Accountant, John William and Mrs Grace Mary (née Lorrain) Brodie.

Lance-Sergeant John "Jack" Daniel Baskeyfield (November, 1922 - September 20, 1944) was a WW2 hero who was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Lance-Sergeant Baskeyfield's body was never found, but there is a memorial statue of him at Festival Heights in Stoke-on-Trent which was erected in the early 1990s.
After crawling under enemy fire to another six-pounder gun, he was killed by a shell from a supporting enemy tank.

Stoke-on-Trent, England, John received his call up papers to serve with the Anti-Tank Platoon, Support Company, 2nd Battalion The South Staffordshire Regiment, in February, 1942.
When their battalion was attacked Baskeyfield was badly wounded in the leg, and the rest of the crew were either killed or badly wounded.

On 20th September 1944 during the battle of Arnhem Lance-Sergeant Baskeyfield of the South Staffords 1st Airborne Division was the NCO in charge of a six-pounder anti tank gun in Oosterbeek.
For his actions Lance-Sergeant Baskeyfield who was originally born in Stoke on Trent was awarded the Victoria Cross, one of two won by the Staffordshire Regt during the battle of Arnhem.
During the early part of the attack Baskeyfield and his crew destroyed 2 Tiger tanks and a self propelled gun as Baskeyfield calmly commanded his men to let each tank come within 100 yards before firing.

John Colwell, was reported missing in action of Holland on April 8, 1944 after the B17 bomber he was assigned to was shot down.
John Colwell was a prisoner of war in World War II but we would not know that from his smiling photo as the airman with flight goggles on looking down at us from the dark back wall of the Memorial Building at Greenfield.
John Colwell was a German prisoner of war who was captured and confined by the Nazis in a prison camp, the same one Stalag 17B in Austria, where Robert Kingen was confined.

On 14th September 1857, at the Kashmir Gate, Delhi, India, Sergeant John Smith showed conspicuous gallantry, along with Lieutenant Salkeld and a Lieutenant Home, 8 Sappers and Bugler Hawthorne, in the performance of their duty blowing in the Kashmir Gate, of the fortress, in daylight.

Catherine Yamarino and her brother Phil unveil the stamp honoring their cousin, Buffalo native and World War II hero Sgt. John Basilone, Thursday aboard the USS Little Rock.
He and Basilone spent an evening together before both shipped out to the Pacific, recalled Yamarino, who with his sister, Catherine, and other relatives unveiled a portrait of the handsome gunnery sergeant that will adorn the new 37-cent stamp.
