  John Sewell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Sewell, CM, (born 1940) is a political activist and wirter on muncipal affairs; he was the mayor of Toronto, Canada from 1978 to 1980.
Sewell also established himself as a leading critic of the Toronto Police, demanding greater accountability to the public, and was a leading defender of gay rights, endorsing gay rights activist George Hislop's 1980 candidacy for city council, at a time when it was rare for public figures to express support for same-sex rights.
Sewell was an advisor to East London, South Africa's city council from 1994 to 1999 and as advisor on the re-establishment of local government in Malawi in 2000.

 John Sewell 1785 - 1873, Pioneer of Western Australia
John Sewell Senior spent his early years in Little Maplestead, Essex where his father was tenant of Maplestead Hall and well known for his interest in the production of seed crops and his involvement with the invention of the mole plough.
John Sewell Senior died in York Western Australia, where he had been living for a number of years, on the 27th April 1873 at the age of 87, his wife Ann having died the year prior on 10th January 1872.
John Junior died in 1901 at the age of 87 years and is buried in the Pingelly Cemetery, where a headstone marks his gravesite.

However, despite Sewell's wrong headed, ill advised, quixotic drive to end up victorious, it was a low PC vote as well as a low Sewell vote plus age that ultimately removed the father of amalgamation from the field.
Sewell is the sentimental favourite but can only win if he can convince voters that he can win and that a Sewell vote isn't a wasted vote (this will depend on whether or not Sewell can blanket the riding with signs and knock on more doors than the opposition).
Sewell still can't be discounted--a lot of experts are still projecting him as a likely winner (which probably causes a bit of wishful-thinking resentment among partisan politicos).

John’s (2) will (D/ABW35/46 Essex RO) where he is described as a yeoman mentions his wife Ellen and from the will of Thomas Hardy of Gosfleld in 1583 (Essex Wills vol 4 by F G Emmison) we learn that her name is Ellen Johnson daughter of Sebastian.
John (2) leaves his ‘capital messuage wherein I now dwell’ (we find from later evidence that this was called ‘Guyblons’) in Great Henny to his son John (3) together with lands in Little Henny and Middleton.
Arms were granted to Robert Sewell son of John on 6th June 1667 (College of Heralds) Argent on bend gules, 3 martlets of the first, crest on a helmet, a mural crown surmounted with a martlet of the first.

John Sewell’s first foray into the mysteries of land use planning began in 1966 in the Trefann Court Urban Renewal Area in downtown Toronto, where he worked with local residents and businessmen to oppose a city-sponsored scheme to clear the area and replace it with new public housing and an industrial park.
John was involved in the formative discussions to create a new neighbourhood downtown, the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood, and was heavily involved in voicing the basic planning principles underlying this development including: mixed uses; a grid street pattern; building forms that reflected the existing city; and so forth.
John’s specific focus in this report was in respect to the creation of employment strategies to ensure that the new community would not be a bedroom community but would create enough jobs for those living there so that commuting would not be necessary.

John continued to work with residents helping them to redevelop a relocation plan, adopted by TCHC, and to proceed with redevelopment in phases so that 75 units in the south part of the project would remain until new replacement housing had been built in the north section of the project.
John worked with the residents throughout 2002 and 2003 to ensure that they had some kind of voice in the plan of redevelopment, although TCHC has done much to exclude them.
John believes that this argument is wrong-headed and that the underlying objection is really to the current development form and the way Regent Park has been managed.
