John Francis "Jack" Shelley ( September 3, 1905 – September 1, 1974) was the mayor of San Francisco, California from 1964 to 1967, the first Democrat elected to the office in 50 years, and the first in a line of Democratic mayors that lasts to the present ( as of 2005).
Shelley was entered the House of Representatives in 1949 and served until 1964, when he ran for mayor of San Francisco and won by a 12-point margin against his opponent, Harold Dobbs.
Shelley's son, Kevin Shelley, was a member of the California State Assembly from 1997 - 2003 and served as California's Secretary of State from 2003 - 2005.

Shelley came from a monied family; and in 1810 entered University College, Oxford; he was expelled in March 1811 for refusing to admit authorship of The Necessity of Atheism.
Mary Shelley included it in her collection of his works, published in 1839, and in the second edition added some material that had been omitted from the first, because of a fear of 'shocking the general reader from the violence of their attack on religion'.
Shelley was very upset by Keats's death from tuberculosis in Rome on February 23rd, 1821, and wrote a poem entitled Adonais to mourn his friend.

About 3-4 years ago I donated a Gerrish Rowing Canoe to John Shelley of the Maine Small Craft Museum in Thomaston, ME. The boat was in rough shape but still serviceable.
My intent is simply to make sure that the canoe is not decaying in neglect and to recover it if it did not make it into the hands of someone capable of saving her.
Gunwales and decks had been replaced or spliced with rough cut lumber, seats added in bow and stern for paddling, mast step and thwart for sailing, and the small brass builder's plate was attached to one of the rails when the deck was replaced.
