John Sheppard (Stargate) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sheppard is an experienced pilot and second-generation military man, though his reputation was somewhat tarnished when he disobeyed a direct order in Afghanistan in an attempt to save the lives of several servicemen.
Afterwards, Sheppard and his team found a planet not used to visitors due to the fact their Stargate was in orbit where they found a young female Wraith who, it seemed, didn't feed on humans.
Sheppard fought and killed her, but not before she infected him with the retrovirus ("Instinct").

Sheppard did not hesitate to make this new connection; but at the same time said that he did not admit of the partnership with a view to any advantage to himself, but that Grace might reap the profits of their depredations.
Sheppard, who was exceedingly fatigued, returned to the garret and lay down for more than two hours; after which he crept down once more as far as the room where the company were, when he heard a gentleman taking leave of the family, and saw the maid light him downstairs.
Sheppard had yet a further view to his preservation, even after execution; for he desired his acquaintances to put him into a warm bed as soon as he should be cut down, and try to open a vein, which he had been told would restore him to life.

John was about to say no automatically, but he was hungry, he just hadn’t wanted to face everyone in the mess hall; after the day he’d had, the idea of people staring at him—or worse, asking questions—was more than he wanted to deal with.
John made a noise that might have been a scream, if he’d had enough air for it, but suddenly he was upright, on his four knees, and Rodney grabbed his upper body tight to keep John from pitching face-first into the snow.
John was surprisingly weak, but he thought that might be the drugs, since if he’d really been hurt that badly he should be in a lot of pain, but he was just feeling nicely floaty and comfortable.

Sheppard was a prolific contemporary of Tallis, who is sadly neglected at the moment.

If you need convincing of Sheppard's genius, just listen to the Amen of Jesu salvator saeculi, redemptis - taken individually some of the lines sound positively 20th century in their modernity, and in combination it takes your breath away - it's hard not to say 'he can't do that!' - but he does.
