Teignmouth sailed for India in 1768 as a writer for the East India Company, a trading organisation with effective political control of Britain's Asian territories.
He accused Teignmouth of being 'a principal actor and party in certain offences' for which the corrupt former Governor-General of Bengal, Warren Hastings, had infamously stood trial in 1787.

His term of office was also signalized by a mutiny of the officers of the Indian army, which he met with concessions.
He was created a baronet in 1792, and Baron Teignmouth in the peerage of Ireland in 1798.

The marriage of Charlotte to Sir John Shore affected the Cornish family quite profoundly, with younger members of the family from this time forwards turning their thoughts to India.
Her eldest son, Charles John Shore, became 2nd Baron Teignmouth on the death of his father, whilst Frederick John Shore m.1830, Charlotte Cornish, 2nd daughter of George Cornish of Salcombe Hill.

Under storm-stay-sails she was unable to claw off shore and when both bower anchor chains snapped she was driven ashore on the 19 February in a small sandy cove on the rocky coast near Villanova de Mille Fuentes.
Because of the deep water the hull was undamaged and an attempt was made to warp her away with an anchor but she swung round, was holed on a rock and then drifted along the coast until she foundered in a small cove surrounded by high cliffs and open to gales from the south-west.
