John Skelton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Skelton received in 1493 the same honour at Cambridge, and also, it is said, at Leuven.
Skelton frequently signed himself "regius orator" and poet-laureate, but there is no record of any emoluments paid in connection with these dignities, although the Abbé du Resnel, author of Recherches sur les poètes couronnez, asserts that he had seen a patent (1513-1514) in which Skelton was appointed poet-laureate to Henry VIII.

Skelton also turned his attention to what was to become a lifetime habit, the engaging in verbose criticism of a long list of people (living and dead), whom he publicly attacked or mocked in his poetry, such as Sir Christopher Garnescbe or Garneys, William Lilly, Robert Gagwin.
What distinguishes all of Skelton’s verse is his animated descriptions, potent drama combined with caricature, combination of high and low linguistic registers and quick wit (although there are sections of his poems that fail to maintain such standards); but the most distinctive feature of his poetry emerged during this satirical period of writing.
Skeltonics are the prime effect used in “The Tunning of Elinour Rumming”, which is a rollicking satire of an alewife who adulterates her brew.

 John Skelton: A Few Tunes
Produced by the well-known flute player and member of the House Band, this CD/booklet combination was not intended as a commercial release, but rather as a teaching aide for John's flute students.
However, the word has gotten out of John's excellent playing on the CD, and this has become an overnight success, not only with flute players, I'm told, but also with accompanists who find in this collection of unaccompanied recordings a great tool to practice their skills.
Skelton's second volume of tunes contains 46 jigs, reels and hornpipes, which he also plays on a companion CD on flute and whistle.

JOHN SKELTON is a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Many of John Skelton's figures can be read as elegiac: a solitary woman on a sofa, a bather staring listlessly after a swim, a farmer trekking home alone – all caught in a kind of monumental loneliness recalling the best of Edward Hopper, a longtime Skelton hero.
John's one-man show at Oisin was the most successful in the 22-year history of the Gallery.

[EMLS 1.1 (April 1995): 2.1-17] Skelton and Barclay, Medieval and Modern
Neither Skelton nor Barclay fits easily in either category, however, and in the end it appears their quarrel would have come less of their differences than of their likeness: they were similarly situated in the Tudor literary system.
While Skelton was among the writers attached to the early Tudor court who styled themselves "laureate"--others included Bernard André, Pietro Carmeliano, and Andrea Ammonio--they were a pretty bad lot, all of them probably guilty of the faults (frivolity and vanity, chiefly) that Barclay charges to laureates in general.
Skelton and Barclay occupied--or sought to occupy (Skelton, in addition to being the older, was also the more successful)--the same niche in the transitional literary economy of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, between medieval and modern.

He is, however, better known as an accomplished and distinctive flute player.

And now I see for myself how distinctively choppy and rhymey John Skelton's work is. I've just read the first 146 lines of "Phyllyp Sparowe" (or "The Book of Phillip Sparrow"), a steady piece narrated by a little girl who has lost her beloved bird to the nunnery's cat, based on a true story.
I won't be forgetting the definition of "skeltonics" now.
Also read: "To Mistress Margery Wentworth" (bleh -- soppy and common) and "Lullay, lullay, like a child" (interestingly sensual, nice pace, but the form isn't as much fun as P. Sparrow -- these two should be read with a more substantial breather inbetween).
