Having used those precise words as a title for talks to groups as varied as high school prospectives (mostly recruited athletes), reuning alumni, the staff in the development office, and campus tour guides, I agreed.
At the end of Dickey's presidency both students and faculty competed aggressively to become part of Dartmouth, alumni basked in the increasing national and international prominence of their alma mater, and the college represented an educational philosophy which gave it a unique place in the world of higher education.

Dartmouth's motto is Vox Clamantis in Deserto, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness" (a reference to John the Baptist as well as to the college's location on what was once the frontier of European settlement).
During the 1960s, under the support of Dartmouth President John Sloan Dickey, the College renovated the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, made the Lodge the final destination for all Trips, and brought participation up to two-thirds of the incoming class.
Today, the Trips take place in the two weeks prior to the standard orientation week, and involve a three-night, four-day trip of hiking, cycling, kayaking, or even nature photography, culminating in a tradition-filled night spent at the College-owned Moosilauke Ravine Lodge.

(One of my greatest teachers, John Sloan Dickey, who was no liberal, used to say that the danger in long political struggles is that the nature of your foreign enemy can sometimes wipe off on your domestic character.)
But the purpose here is to say that for all of the momentous events and changes that have occurred in the last five years, there have been periods of change more momentous than this.
