John Smyth - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-18)
He and his company were then faced by the dilemma that their own infant baptism did not count, and Smyth solved the problem by first baptizing himself (hence the name Se-Baptist), probably by allusion, and then administering the rite to Helwys and the others.
A friendly Mennonite allowed Smyth's church to meet in his bakery, but Smyth himself died of consumption in August 1612, more than two years before the remaining members of his band, by then reduced to 31, were admitted (January 1615) into the Mennonite communion.
Smyth was, like the other Cambridge men of his day, especially the Separatists, the bondservant of logic, and wherever he saw "the beckoning hand of a properly constructed syllogism" he was ready to follow.

Short Biography of John Smyth, Baptists
Smyth’s history begins in England where he was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1594.
In 1609, Smyth, along with a group in Holland, came to believe in believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism which was the norm at that time) and they came together to form the first “Baptist”; church.
First, Smyth insisted that true worship was from the heart and that any form of reading from a book in worship was an invention of sinful man. Prayer, singing and preaching had to be completely spontaneous.

 John Smyth by Dramatic Distinctives
John Smyth (1554-1612) could be claimed as the founder of the Baptist church.
Unfortunately, Smyth was not satisfied with his creation and left it to pursue another.
Smyth may have been an unwilling father of the Baptist movement, but his search for religious truth and his willingness to sacrifice makes his story a powerful one to share to modern Christians.

Shortly thereafter, Smyth left the group, and Thomas Helwys took over the leadership, leading the church back to England in 1611.
