If Solomon Sparks and wife Sarah were living in Frederick County, Maryland., as late as June 20, 1753, as this deed would indicate, then their son John, born Feb. 25, 1753, was born in Frederick County, Maryland, rather than in Rowan County, North Carolina, and was carried to North Carolina as a babe in arms.
By 1782 John Sparks had purchased 200 acres of land in Surry, on Brushy Mountain, and was taxed with 200 acres and 1 poll, 2horses (or mules) and 6 cattle.
This second John was born in 1755 (supposedly in North Carolina), and died in1834 in Washington County, Georgia.

Edinburgh 2005: Absolutely Presents Frank Hovis in Filth
John Sparkes was responsible for some of the more memorable grotesques from the show, including the very Welsh Siadwell and this one, Frank Hovis, a disgusting club comic whose demeanour was as filthy as his act.
Staggering onto the stage in the obligatory frilly shirt, heavily soiled suit and simultaneously sloshing his pints around and he snorts back the phlegm, Hovis’s character hasn’t changed one iota in the 15 years since he last took to an Edinburgh stage.
John Sparkes is probably one of the countries funniest people.

Edinburgh 2005: Absolutely Presents John Sparkes and Pete Baikie
John Sparkes and Peter Baike portray a parade of warped, failed, amateurish characters in that music hall spirit.
There is, fans from their earlier work will be pleased to know, a revival of miserable Welsh performance poet Siadwell, with his wonderfully abrupt comic verses, and Owen Bongo, the dreadful ventriloquist with a brick for a dummy.
Both those are Sparkes, while Baike portrays an erudite dressing-gowned Noel Coward type, though much more sleazy, parodying the now twee lyrics of those oh-so clever songs of the age.

For the TV version the radio cast was swelled by two Sassenachs, Helen Lederer and John Sparkes, and the result was a fast-moving, irreverent and lively production that featured a number of recurring characters and situations.

The show had a creditable run, was never less than entertaining and its influence was long-lasting, Fisher's characters re-appearing in their own shows (Rab C Nesbitt and The Baldy Man) and Lederer utilising her character in subsequent projects.

The Doulton Art Pottery was established following a liaison between the commercial stoneware manufacturer Doulton & Co. and a local school of art established in Lambeth, which was taken charge of by John Sparkes in 1856.
The Doulton Art Pottery was largely responsible for establishing the idea and value of producing Art Pottery in conjunction with an established commercial manufacturer, therefore enabling other potteries to become world famous following the establishment of their own studios.
