John Stanier (drummer) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Stanier (born 2 August 1968 in Baltimore, Maryland) first came into the spotlight in 1989 as the drummer for the band Helmet.
Stanier cites Neil Peart as his biggest influence, though he hates double bass drumming.

The drummer, John Stanier, soon joined in, starting what was to be forty-five minutes of relentless battering in a violent struggle to keep up with the electronically dictated tempo.
Stanier went back and forth between burying his head between his knees and almost jumping off his throne in order to strike his solitary cymbal, that towered about ten feet over the rest of his set.
Stanier also told me that they have plans to start recording a full-length album, but implied that it wouldn't be out for quite some time.

In Music We Trust - INTERVIEW: Tomahawk: Mit Gas! A Chat With Drummer John Stranier
Comprised of Patton, Kevin Rutmanis, bassist (Melvins), drummer John Stanier (previously of Helmet), and de facto leader and guitarist Duane Denison (previously of the Jesus Lizard), the band exudes professionalism both on- and off-stage.
Stanier, who like his band mates brings with him diverse musical tastes and training, was sold on the idea of joining Tomahawk by Denison.
Stanier said the process of assembling the album resembled that of the first, with perhaps more streamlining of the writing process.

These days, John Stanier is the drummer for a band called Tomahawk, which is led by Duane Dennison of the Jesus Lizard and also features Mike Patton (do I have to tell you who Mike Patton is? I hope not) and Kevin Rutmanis of the Melvins.
In this interview John talked about his career as an accidental DJ, his drumming philosophy, what Mike Patton is really like, and how it feels to have been part of a highly influential band like Helmet.
I would say that for most hard rock drummers, their kick would be the center of their drumset, but for me it's definitely my snare, absolutely.

Could be a lousy phone hookup or it might be that eight years with the NYC quartet has taken its toll on his hearing.
Stanier chuckles when he recounts how he swiped a kitchen pot in Boise for found-object percussion wizard (and recent tourmate) Rick Lee of Skeleton Key.

John Stanier waves to me from across Broome Street in lower Manhattan.

And Stanier's high-pitched, tweaked snare drum is still cutting through the fabric of guitars and noise.

 HELMET - the Aftertaste interview
It's funny," Stanier continues, "It's like I think we've been at the same level for a while now but, out of nowhere I've realised that for the first time ever I've taken a step back and looked at what we've done through to the point that we're at now.
If Staniers words have the brittle scent of sobriety and mortality licking at their heels then so does Helmet's fourth album the compelling, coruscating and muscled Aftertaste.
Unravelling like one long thread of jagged, stalagnite riffs, bittersweet edged lyricism that twists through dervishes of betrayal, alienation, boredom and contempt it also earmarks a new chapter in the continuing evolvement and growth of one of America's notorious brutal hardcore brats.

I'm now selfishly dragging Stanier into this ancient Metallica vs. Helmet debate because this dude was the drummer for Helmet, which means he is, in large part, responsible for busting out those hugely influential rhythms.
In addition to Stanier, Battles is David Konopka on bass; he also plucked those four strings for Lynx, a Chicago-based, instrumental math-rock outfit from the late '90s.
This rock-dance ambiguity in Stanier's drum sound reflects a much larger development in Battles' overall aesthetic: the dissolution of the traditional differences between man-powered indie rock and machine-generated IDM.

While Stanier evidently is the kind of man with a clear and rigid sense of conviction and purpose, Hamilton blurs preconception as the protagonist of angst who likes to shroud himself in shadows and ambiguity.

The song "Milquetoast" appeared on the soundtrack to the hit film The Crow; Stanier's unrelenting drumming drove tracks like "I Know," and Hamilton's jazz background showed on the cover of Dizzy Gillespie's "Beautiful Love." Yet Betty proved to be a critical success but a commercial failure, its versatility relegating it to the cutout bins.
But the Helmet influence was heard throughout rock, whether by Hamilton's involvement with industrial groups (Nine Inch Nails) or indirectly through metal acts (System of a Down), and even the atonal distortion of rap-rock hybrids such as Korn and Limp Bizkit.
Helmet returned in 2004 when Hamilton recruited Traynor and a new rhythm section consisting of drummer John Tempesta (Rob Zombie, Testament) and bassist Frank Bello (Anthrax).

 PIXELSURGEON | Reviews | Gigs | Battles
Battles’ sound is a fusion of Stanier’s powerful and extremely cohesive drumming, the guitars of ex-Don Caballero Ian Williams and former member of Lynx Dave Knopka and the vox and effects of Tyondai Braxton.
Comparing individual tracks at a Battles gig is probably a little pointless, by the second or third tune the soundscapes blur together into a constant wall of noise, punctuated by Stanier but with crucial contributions from his bandmates, Braxton being particularly impressive with his vocal effects and general noodling.
They do manage to prise the band back on stage for an encore but the sheer physicality of the whole thing means they are satisfied with just one tune and quickly disperse into the seedy glory of Camden.

Williams defied the notion that brainy math-rockers are not just into systematic prog-metal tumult, but sloppy makeout sessions to boot - and this chick obviously was turned on to the sexy mathematica antics.
Battles links up Williams with heavy hitters on both the playing and label fields - avant-jazz experimentalist Tyondai Braxton, drummer John Stanier (ex-Helmet and Tomohawk) and David Konopka (Lynx) with Baltimore's can-do-no-wrong Monitor Records, respectively.
The repetition of opener "B + T" is confounding - one would think the fusion of Williams' patented cerebral, jazz-pierced lineage with that of Braxton's coiled clangs would be an all-instrumental orgasm, but coupled with Stanier's rudimentary backbeat, the song translates as too calculated (read: boring).

Propelled to great heights by guitarist Peter Mengede, drummer John Stanier, bassist Henry Bogdan, and jazz-schooled guitarist/vocalist Page Hamilton, the albums Strap It On and Meantime became favorites among metalheads and indie rockers alike.

Patton in Tomahawk is a star-studded cast that includes former Jesus Lizard/Hank Williams III guitarist Duane Denison, former Mark of Cain/Helmet drummer John Stanier, and Melvins bassist Kevin Rutmanis, which proves to be quite similar musically to FNM's latter-day output (circa Angel Dust, King for a Day, and Album of the Year).

In the meantime (ha!), former Helmet drummer John Stanier (who was smart enough to skip the Helmet reunion) is on tour with Battles, a band that is mechanically precise and Spartan -- but in an intelligent way.
With Stanier's punch-press drumming, the staccato guitar sting of Ian Williams (yes, from Don Caballero) and the strange percolations and stutters of composer Tyondai Braxton, Battles is the permutation of intellectual superiority and super-tight musicianship that is the opposite of stupid.
That won't translate into album sales either, by the way, but twelve-minute soundscapes constructed of input-jack pop, skittery cymbal work and amp hiss are a tough sell if you're working the stupid circuit.

Hailing from the fertile New York post-punk and hardcore scenes, Helmet brought forth a dynamic style of heavy rock which is uncompromising, elegant, and crushing.
Founded by 6-string wizard Page Hamilton and rounded out by bassist Henry Bogdan and drummer John Stanier, as well as a revolving lineup of guitarists, they gave metal a much needed kick in the ass in a time where to play heavy music you where required to have long hair, tattoos, and dark imagery.
