John Stanley was born in London on 17th January, 1712 and was baptised at the church of St. Swithin, London Stone two weeks later on 1st February.
Stanley was born on the 17th of January O.S. At about the age of two years, he had the misfortune to fall on a marble hearth, with a china basin in his hand, by which accident he was deprived of his sight.
Stanley is generally the first whose hand is arranged: and it is no uncommon thing for him to upbraid the party with being tedious in sorting their cards.

Stanley's works include the opera Teraminta, the dramatic cantata The Choice of Hercules, twelve other cantatas with texts by John Hawkins, the oratorios Jephtha, The Fall of Egypt and Zimri, and instrumental music, notably three volumes of Trumpet Voluntaries (1748, 1752, and 1754).
As with all trumpet voluntaries, this was written for organ utilizing the trumpet stop, hence the name; arrangements for string chamber orchestra and trumpet are modern.

He was one of six children born to his father, also John Stanley (an Officer at Swithin's Lane Post Office) and his wife Elizabeth (née Davy), who had married on June 17th, 1707.
Stanley's Six Concertos for Organ were published in 1775 -- number 4 being described by the English writer on music Charles Cudworth as "probably the finest of all English organ concertos."
Stanley's surviving relatives appeared to take little pleasure from his musical property -- his musical instruments and manuscripts were hastily auctioned at Christie's in London on June 24th, 1786.

If you have heard them before, then you probably heard them in one of the versions for string orchestra — all six performed all on one sound and textural level as Six Concertos for Strings.
These concertos were entitled "For Strings and Continuo, or Keyboard and Continuo", and we took John Stanley at his word!
