John Stark was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire in 1728.
John Stark was one of the Jury that found John André guilty for spying and in helping in the conspericy of Benidict Arnold to surrender West Point, New York to the British.
Stark and the Battle of Bennington were later commemorated with the 306-foot tall Bennington Battle Monument in Bennington, Vermont.

It is a tradition in the Walker family of Bedford that the Walker boys helped their Uncle Stark for three years in the making of turpentine, and that they 'crossed the river' and in the fall of the year 1737 built a log structure on lots later to be known as the town of Bedford.
Archibald Stark, on the other hand was not one to turn the other cheek...[MacNeil was 'six and a half in height with a corresponding frame and a stern will...his wife well mated with him.' He was said to have left Ireland because he knocked a person of distinction from his horse.

The words "Live Free or Die," written by General John Stark, July 31, 1809, shall be the official motto of the state.
The motto became "Live Free Or Die," as once voiced by General John Stark, the state's most distinguished hero of the Revolutionary War, and the world famous Old Man of the Mountain was voted the official state emblem.
The motto was part of a volunteer toast which General Stark sent to his wartime comrades, in which he declined an invitation to head up a 32nd anniversary reunion of the 1777 Battle of Bennington in Vermont, because of poor health.

On June 16th, the rebels, fearing a preemptive British attack on their positions in Cambridge and Roxbury, decided to take and hold the high ground surrounding the city, including Dorchester Heights, Bunker Hill, and Breed's Hill.
On March 23rd, 1777, Stark resigned his commission in disgust, although he pledged his aid to New Hampshire should it be needed.

It was raining when Thomas Allen ("The Fighting Parson" from Berkshire, Massachusetts) and his men arrived at General Stark's campground before the fight at Bennington, and the General proposed they wait for the rain to stop before they engaged the British.
General Stark is quoted as saying "If the Lord should once more give us sunshine and I do not give you enough fighting, I will never ask you to come out again." The sun did break through and the British were soundly beaten by the assembled farmers from Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
