  John Stevens
Stevens' third report, published on 17 April 2003 upheld the claim and explicitly said that collusion leading to the murder of Northern nationalists (and some unionists wrongly throught to be catholic or nationalist) had taken place.
Stevens was born in Brentford, the son of a tap dancer[?].
Stevens played alongside a large number of prominent free improvisors in the SME, including Derek Bailey, Peter Kowald[?] and Julie Tippetts[?], but from the 1970s, the make-up of the SME began to settle down to a regular group of Stevens, Nigel Coombes[?] playing violin, and Roger Smith[?] playing guitar.

Two of the most fervent of England's first generation free jazz/improvised music experimenters, drummer John Stevens (1940-1994) and alto saxophonist Mike Osborne (b.1941) aren't as well known as they should be for a variety of reasons.
Stevens, who for 30 odd years until his death directed various versions of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble (SME), one of the seminal experiments in defining BritImprov, was a famously irascible character.
Meanwhile Stevens' heavy, tub thumping rhythm and fake book bop licks are as far away from the SME as The Plough was from the Barbizon Centre.

John Stevens, New Cool | | Guardian Unlimited Arts
Stevens was a passionately animated educator and campaigner, as well as a world-class percussionist, and he was tirelessly devoted to the notion that many more people could make music than ever thought they could.
Stevens played plenty of free improv, but this 1992 set from the Crawley jazz festival finds him in a more straightahead mood, with a young Ed Jones, on tenor, a fledgling Byron Wallen on trumpet and Gary Crosby on bass.
Stevens' delightful ride-cymbal sound and springy offbeats, and his affection for playfully freeboppish Ornette Coleman-like themes, are all in evidence across five long originals.

 EMANEM 4117: JOHN STEVENS QUARTET
Stevens' drumming is marked by his love of Blackwell, Higgins and Elvin, but is unmistakable for anyone else's; it's springy, relaxed, flowing from his exemplary cymbal work, attentive to nuances of sound and melody, never kicking the soloists along bluntly but nonetheless excitable and responsive.
Stevens was a consummate ambassador to both camps and was especially adept at blurring, sometimes even erasing, the boundaries between the two.
Stevens seems to lap it all up and spit it back out at us eager listeners, with a diamond geezer's rough'n'ready sparring that starts with a shove and ends with a lung-busting bear hug.

The gig was a sell out, mainly because Muthspiel's drummer is the great Brian Blade, who is more usually seen on the stages of large concert halls rather than the intimate surroundings of a small club.
It may have been the superstar drummer who drew them in the first instance, but after the gig all the audience were talking about Muthspiel.
Stevens was a great instrumentalist and improviser, but he is best remembered as a huge motivating force on the domestic music scene from the late 60s to the early 90s.

This set was recorded with John Corbett on trumpet; the three-guitar team of Tim Stone, David Cole, and Nigel Moyse ; Jeff Young on bass and organ; Nick Stevens on bass; and Ron Herman on double bass.
Stevens' compositions here range from Captain Beefheart -styled syncopated blues-funk tomes (the title track) to extended interval studies ("Out of Order") to extrapolations on jazz-rock tropes that melt both genres into a new improvisational stew ("That's What").
Stevens knows that to really move something forward you need to touch upon the past and the present.

Stevens' premature death in 1994 brought this exciting chapter in the history of improvised music to an unfortunate and early close.

The Spontaneous Music Ensemble was formed in 1965 by British drummer John Stevens and saxophonist Trevor Watts with the intent of creating a jazz version of the AMM avantgarde collective.
A quintet with Parker, Bailey, Stevens and Watts was documented on Quintessence 1 (october 1973) and Quintessence 2 (february 1974), released in 1987.
Stevens only imposed constraints on the improvisers' moves to make sure that they would participate and not alienate each other.

Bailey's guitar is much like John Cage's prepared piano; both innovations enhanced the respective instrument's percussive possibilities.
In the early '60s, Bailey played in a trio called Joseph Holbrooke, with drummer Tony Oxley and bassist (and later renowned classical composer) Gavin Bryars.
In 1966 Bailey moved to London; there, he formed a number of important musical associations with, among others, drummer John Stevens, saxophonist Evan Parker, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and bassist Dave Holland.

The album was viewed, at the time of its release, as the most complete statement of Wheeler’s musical intentions, and said one writer: "Garbarek may very well be the trumpeter’s ideal front-line partner...a kind of asceticism informs their playing; when they are heard in tandem its impact is redoubled".

In addition to the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, drummer John Stevens had a number of other outlets to exercise his multi-faceted musical vision.
According to Paul Wilson’s John Stevens discography, Fast Colour was predominantly active (or in any case recorded nearly exclusively) in 1988, and played the same suite of music—a dedication to the late Johnny Dyani—in each appearance.
Though Stevens is well known for his sensitivity as an accompanist and as a creator of structure within freer settings, it’s remarkable to see that his vision could shape extended suites with the same aplomb.
