He was one of the principal supporters of the marriage with Darnley, came the leader of the Roman Catholic nobles, and with Mnox obtained the chief power in the government, successfully protecting Mary and Darnley from Murray's attempts to regain his ascendancy by force of arms.
According to John Knox he openly tended mass in the queen's chapel, and was especially trusted Mary in her project of reinstating Roman Catholicism.
Atholl and Argyll, who were now corresponding with Spain in hopes of assistance from that quarter, then advanced to Stirling with a large force, when a compromise was arranged, the three earls being all included in the government.

Moray was the illegitimate son of James V of Scotland and Lady Margaret Erskine, daughter of John Erskine, 4th Earl of Mar.

 The Ruthven Raid
In the so-called Raid of Ruthven, the Earl of Gowrie and some of his fellow-nobles (possibly including Ucthred Macdowall, 10th of Garthland who was implicated as a conspirator) seized the young King James IV and, for some ten months, held him captive.
While the King was hunting in Atholl in August 1582, he was abducted by Gowrie and imprisoned in his House of Ruthven until, the next morning, he signed a document proclaiming himself to be quite free and that Lennox was to be banished from Scotland.
John was described as "the 7th son of Uchtred MacDowall, 10th of Garthland" by the genealogist Mary Semple and as his son from his 1st wife Margaret Kennedy.

The curtain wall that surrounds this courtyard castle was built by the Comyns, but the eastern side of the castle was completely remodelled in the 16th century by John Stewart, 4th earl of Atholl.
