John Stirratt is the bassist for Wilco and the former bassist of Uncle Tupelo.
Stirratt is also the twin brother of Laurie Stirratt (ex Blue Mountain, ex-wife of Cary Hudson), they released an album together in 2004 titled Arabella.
Stirratt and Pat Sansone also have another band, The Autumn Defense.

The Stirratts were raised in a family of lapsed musicians, John Stirratt says.
Stirratt, who briefly contemplated graduate school, eventually joined Uncle Tupelo, first as a guitar tech, then as a full-fledged member, just in time to watch the band implode during the recording of their last album, "Anodyne." "The Hilltops had gotten Uncle Tupelo a gig in our hometown, and we kind of became friends," Stirratt remembers.
Stirratt, currently on tour with Wilco, will open for himself at the duo's upcoming record release party, and hopes to regroup with Sansone sometime this winter to record a new Autumn Defense album.

Ostensibly a duo with Stirratt and fellow multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, the Autumn Defense is an example of pastoral pop at its finest, hinting at a broad range of influences from a wide spectrum of genres, artists and eras and an equally diverse audience appeal.
Stirratt and Sansone met in the late '80s while members of mutually admired bands in the Southeast, but didn't actually begin interacting musically until they both wound up living in New Orleans in 1998.
One of the pair's conscious goals was to incorporate more of Sansone's material; to that end, Sansone and Stirratt each contributed two songs they had written on their own and then collaborated on the remainder of the album.
