John Sturges' final film is one of his best.
Sturges use of no dialogue in several key scenes makes them quite memorable as the reaction shots on Holden, William Demarest and William Campbell tell what is in their minds.

John Sturges settled in Fairfield in 1660 in the 37th year of his age; he was made a freeman May 14, 1669.
He is supposed by many to have been a son of Edward Sturges of Yarmouth, Mass., and to have gone to Fairfield, Conn., but owing to the absence of a portion of the Yarmouth records it has been impossible to establish this.
It is believed that John Sturgis was the son of Edward Sturgis of England and Barnstable but no proof of this exists due to the loss of records by fire during the War of 1812.

 John Sturges
One of Hollywood's top action directors of the late 1950s and 1960s, John Sturges, for a time, was a name associated almost exclusively with large-scale action-adventure films.
Sturges received his only Academy Award nomination for Bad Day At Black Rock, and his career was made, as he became sought out by Hollywood's top producers.
Sturges then became his own producer, beginning with The Magnificent Seven (1960), a large-scale Western action vehicle adapted from Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954).

John Sturges VHS McQ :: CheapXboxGames.net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
I guess ones enjoyment of the film McQ (1974) is based largely on ones being able to accept a John Wayne aka Marion Michael Morrison in a role one would normally expect see a much younger actor in (Wayne was pushing 70 at the time), perhaps a Clint Eastwood or Steve McQueen.
I was a bit skeptical at first, and maybe the fit never felt complete to me, but even for a man as on in the years as he was, I think Wayne did well, and the movie ended up being a lot of fun in a slightly cockeyed sort of way.
I'll admit that on the surface John Wayne playing a tough, renegade, "Dirty Harry" style cop may be a bit far-fetched, but hey, it's John Wayne...few could ever match his screen presence so you just accept it as a pretty entertaining cop action film.

He looks for both a hotel room and a local Japanese farmer named Komoko, but his inquiries are greeted at first with open hostility, then with blunt threats and harassment, and finally with escalating violence.

Westerns > Western Directors > John Sturges
Novelist Leon Uris wrote the script for this Western directed by John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven) and based on the life and times of Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) and his sickly companion, Doc Holliday (Kirk Douglas).
The action inevitably leads to the legendary battle between the two heroes and the villainous Clanton gang, but the film is also very much about the conflicts each man faces with women, with one another, and with their own destinies.
Clint Eastwood's stardom was supernova, thanks to Dirty Harry; John Sturges, the man behind The Magnificent Seven and a dozen other memorably leathery Westerns, was directing; and Elmore Leonard was the screenwriter.

To Sturges, it was a Western composed of pure situational comedy elements, a form of filmmaking that he had not tackled previously, plus the scope of the picture was truly daunting, even for Sturges.
The day would usually start beautifully, and then the afternoon storms would come up." Worst of all, a stuntman named Bill Williams was crushed to death beneath the wheels of a wagon while performing a stunt.
In order to properly promote the film, Sturges released the picture through United Artists as a "road show" picture, a special exhibition showing (usually at a prestigious theater on a reserved-seat basis and at a higher admission price).

One of the first Hollywood films to deal openly with white racism toward Japanese Americans during World War II, this drama directed by 1950s action maestro John Sturges (The Great Escape) stars Spencer Tracy as a one-armed stranger named MacReedy, who arrives in the tiny town of Black Rock on a hot day in 1945.
Casting is the film's principal strength, however: Tracy, the indispensable icon of integrity, and Ryan, the indispensable noir image of spiritual blight, are as creatively unlikely a pairing as Sturges's shotgun marriage of Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen in The Magnificent Seven.
What could have been absurd pretentious morass is spared, largely due to the professionalism of John Sturges, displaying all the directorial virtues of craftsmanship, economy, and self-effacement.

It turned most of its featured players (including Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn) into stars and was popular enough to generate four sequels as well as a major hit musical theme by Elmer Bernstein.
