Swigert resigned from NASA and between 1973 and 1977 he was executive director of the Committee on Science and Technology in the U.S. House of Representatives.
On November 2, 1982, Swigert won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Colorado's Sixth Congressional District with 64% of the vote.

It was intended to be the third mission to land on the Moon, but instead is famous for the critical malfunction it suffered and its difficult, but successful return home.
Swigert was a replacement for Ken Mattingly, who later flew to the Moon aboard Apollo 16.
Mattingly was reportedly exposed to German measles prior to the mission, and NASA officials insisted upon removing him from the flight so as not to endanger the mission.

 Apollo 13 - A Successful Failure
Swigert was one of 19 Astronauts selected by NASA in 1966.
In 1978, Swigert ran for the United States Senate from Colorado and was unsuccessful in his first attempt at elective office.
Swigert died of complications from cancer in Washington on December 27, 1982, a week before he would have taken the congressional seat he won in the November 2 election.

Though Swigert is now a new element in the team, the astronauts trained for the remaining of the time, and got used to their new crew member.
Fred Haise does mention with subject, yet reassures there was no doubts of Swigert’s professional abilities, for the backup crew practiced the same drills as they did, and probably even got to practice more time, due to the main crew’s public appearance schedule and last minute arrangements they had to attend to.
Swigert is bossed around by Lovell in the movie at times, and there are even small confrontations between Haise and Swigert while in space.

She was born in rural Morton County, N.D., on Feb. 1, 1916, the seventh of eleven children born to John and Magdalena Bahm of Almont, N.D. She married Lucas (Red) Meuchel on April 14, 1937 in Bismarck, N. D., and came to the Bitterroot in 1937.

There was no time to properly replace the original lunar plaque on Aquarius (which bore Mattingly's name), so Jim Lovell was given a replacement (with Swigert's name) to place over the original plaque once they landed on the moon.
However, because the lunar landing was never made, Lovell kept the plaque, which is one of the few mementos from the mission that he has on display at his home.

An Air Force fighter pilot and engineering test pilot, John “Jack” Swigert earned a master’s degree in aerospace science from Rensselaer’s Hartford campus in 1965 and in 1966 was selected by NASA in its fifth astronaut class.
Swigert, Jim Lovell, and Fred Haise were forced to abort the mission when an oxygen tank exploded; they converted their lunar module into a lifeboat, conserving enough power to assure their survival in the harrowing journey back to Earth.
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Colorado in November 1982, but died of bone cancer one month later before he could be sworn in.

In August 1969 crew assignments for Apollo 13 were announced: James A. Lovell commanded the prime crew, which included Thomas K. Mattingly II as command module pilot and Fred W. Haise as lunar module pilot.
Their backups were John Young, John Swigert, and Charles Duke.
Because of the interruption of telemetry that had just occurred, flight controllers in the MCC had difficultly for the next few minutes determining whether they were getting true readings from the spacecraft sensors or whether the sensors had somehow lost power.

Were it not for the near-vacuum of space, the crew would surely have been killed by the blast and resulting fire.

Ground tests before launch, indicated the possibility of a poorly insulated supercritical helium tank in the LM's descent stage so the flight plan was modified to enter the LM three hours early in order to obtain an onboard readout of helium tank pressure.
Due to an oversight in replacing an underrated component during a design modification, this turned out to severely damage the internal heating elements of the tank.

Swigert is a big man, sixty pounds heavier than Mattingly; and much nimble twisting and turning is required from him to manipulate switches.
Swigert, despite being the man who wrote the astronauts' text book on what action to take in any conceivable difficulty, had a tough job persuading Lovell, veteran of three previous flights, with a total of 570 hours in space, to change his mind.
