Tamihere was born in Auckland as the 10th of 12 children to a Maori father of Ngati Porou, Whakatohea, and Tainui descent, and a mother of Irish and Scottish descent.
Tamihere denies that the interview he gave was on the record, a claim disputed by the journalist in question.
He also alleged that Clayton Cosgrove, previously believed to be one of Tamihere's closest allies in the party, had conducted a "nasty" campaign of telephone harassment against Clark and her husband when Clark deposed Mike Moore as party leader in 1993.

During the last urgent debate on John Tamihere (19 October) I said that whatever the outcome of the formal investigation, Mr Tamihere has to live with making a categorical public statement that he would not accept a golden handshake before the election and then proceeding to accept one after the election.
I went on to say that ultimately he will be judged on the morality rather than the legality of his behaviour, and that he should reflect on that as he makes a political decision about his future.
Ultimately, it is a very sad day for John Tamihere because I think this marks the end of his political career.

Reported on NewstalkZB and running hot on other breakfast radio shows (Bob Kerridge of the SPCA was interviewed by John Banks this morning) is the news that two cats were abandoned by Tamihere on his property.
According to Bob Kerridge on Banksie's show this morning, Tamihere was asked why he abandoned the cats, but he didn't have much to say for himself.
This offence is I guess a minor one compared to the outrageous behaviour of Tamihere in the past, but I believe, like many others, that the way we treat our animals is indicative of the sort of people we really are.

If it is true that John Tamihere was not telling the truth, as the Prime Minister said a few moments ago, then he must have been telling lies.
I do not think that John Tamihere has a problem with diversity; I think the issue is the uni-dimensional approach that Helen Clark, her advisers, and her Cabinet have taken.
John Tamihere has been honest about the fact that there is a very narrow lesbian cabal advising the Prime Minister, that there is an overwhelming dominance of the union movement in this Government, and that if one steps out of line one gets punished with close to fisticuffs.
