In 1966 I was asked to participate in a recording with The Maritime Jazz Orchestra and the trio Azimuth (John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler and Norma Winstone) as featured guests.
I invited John to stay on to perform together as well as record a duo CD (as of yet unreleased).
John brought in a waltz by jazz great Kenny Wheeler, "3/4 PM", as well as a piece of his that I wanted to include on the recording called "Pure and Simple".

This years artist in residence was John Taylor, a player I've been listening to since I first took to jazz in the mid-70s (and he was over ten years into his career at that point!).
Taylor's facility at all tempos, and especially with shifting tempos, was stunning even then.
He is currently enjoying his position at the pinnacle of European jazz piano playing, and the number of younger pianists, especially form Germany, Italy and The Netherlands, who pay tribute to both John's influence, and often also support, is growing daily.

John Taylor, born as Nigel John Taylor on June 20, 1960 in Birmingham, England to a Catholic family, is the co-founder of the popular 1980s group, Duran Duran, where he played bass guitar.
John changed his somewhat nerdy look by ditching his thick glasses for contact lenses and wearing the effeminate clothing of frilly shirts and tight pants that would become known as the New Romantic style.
As the band grew, John switched from being a regular guitarist to the band’s bass guitarist and learned to use his skills to compliment the jazz-like, rhythm section playing of Duran Duran’s new drummer, Roger Taylor who joined the band in 1984.

John cracks up the crowd with tales of his solo roots as lead singer for his rock group, "Johnny Pick and His Scabs." Pizzarelli remembers playing paying gigs with his father and then rushing over to New York clubs to join his own band.

Born in Tavistock, Devon in 1944, composer/multi-instrumentalist John Surman is one of the key figures in a generation of European musicians who have crucially expanded the international horizons of jazz during the past thirty years or so.
His duo with John Taylor toured in China towards the end of 1997 and continues to perform regularly throughout Europe and beyond.
His quartet with John Taylor, Chris Laurence and John Marshall remains one of the most distinctive of European small bands and appeared in November 2003 at the Macau Festival and play in Poland during December.

He was Composer in Residence at the Glasgow Jazz Festival in 1989, producing new work for the Surman/Krog duo plus choir, and re-forming the Brass Project (this group has also performed at the North Sea Festival, and at festivals in Portugal, France, Germany and the UK).
A further commission in 1996 from Salisbury Festival allowed John to return to a long-standing fascination with choral music, producing Proverbs and Songs, an extended work for solo saxophones, pipe organ (John Taylor) and the 80-strong Salisbury Festival Chorus, directed by Howard Moody, and premiered in Salisbury Cathedral.
John Surman is a perennial pollwinner, and in 1989 received the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival and a Wire Award for services to jazz in Britain.
