With Taylor nursing a slim 184 to 179 lead over Evan Evans heading into Round 13, it was going to be a dogfight between the two perennial Pro-2 heavyweights.

Johannes Gütgemann was a German citizen who, after moving to England in 1876, anglicized his name to 'John Taylor.' In 1896, Gütgemann (now Taylor) partnered with William Gue in a bicycle company called 'Taylor Gue Ltd.' on Fleet Street in Spring Hill, Birmingham, in the West Midlands region of England.
During the turn-of-the-century motorcycle boom, Taylor and Gue began building their first motorized bicycle in 1904, called the "Veloce." The first Veloce was not sucessful, and Taylor Gue Ltd. disbanded.
John Taylor went on to form his own motorcycle company, Veloce Ltd. in 1905.

 Taylorspeed Jem
John Taylor was an accomplished Mini racer, having raced a 997cc Cooper, holding several state records and being part of the Neptune Racing Team, and he was looking for a challenge. Taylorspeed had produced a "warm" Morris 1100 S (see Wheels January 1969), but the English designed Mini Jem looked like a great opportunity.
Arrangements were made with Jem Developments in the UK to manufacture their Jem Mk I in Australia, and a complete fibreglass body was imported. Female moulds of the imported body were made at John Arnold's Surf Shop in Adelaide, with a number of modifications from the original, and the first batch of bodies made.
John Taylor built his Jem in very much the design of the UK Jems at the time.

The car (chassis no. 850020) was originally purchased by well-known racing enthusiast Derek Wilkinson, who was a close friend of Lofty England and was offered one of the first E-Types to help publicise the new car in competition.
