Tunstall knew he was shaking a hornet's nest, because he built his store like a fort and hired gunmen as ranch employees, so he was expecting trouble, but he believed the law would protect him.
John Tunstall knew the Kid was a member of Evans’s gang and after meeting the boy in confinement, instead of pressing charges, he offered the Kid employment.

Amelia (Bolton) Church was the daughter of John Bolton, who was head of the Quartermaster Department stationed with army officers at Fort Stanton, New Mexico, for protection of the early settlers from Indians.
Tunstall, who was a popular young Englishman, had established a ranch on the Rio Feliz and stocked it with cattle and horses.

Billy arrived in Lincoln, NM during a time when the Murphy-Dolan Faction and John Tunstall were trying to secure beef contracts with the military in Fort Stanton.
McSween arrived in Lincoln, a village of roughly 400 mostly Hispanic residents, in March, 1875, and Tunstall in November, 1876.
Tunstall's foreman, Dick Brewer, formed a posse called the Regulators, some of whom, like the "Kid", were Tunstall's ranch hands.

The infamous Seven-Rivers gang, of which Jesse Evans, a boyhood friend of Billy the Kid, was a member, fought for the cattle barons.
In 1877, their control was challenged by Alexander McSween, a Lincoln attorney, and John Tunstall, an English entrepreneur -- who were backed by the day's biggest cattle baron, John Chisum.

Employed as a ranchhand with a wealthy English businessman and cattleman named John Henry Tunstall, Billy acts as hired gun in a dispute between Tunstall and rival merchants Lawrence G. Murphy and James J. Dolan.
What began as a price war becomes a range war when on February 18, 1878 the brash young Tunstall (only twenty-three) is assassinated by Murphy's men while Billy and a group of Tunstall cowboys watch helplessly from a nearby mesa.
On March 9, 1878, Billy and other members of Tunstall's posse, or "Regulators," which include Dick Brewer (Tunstall's foreman), Charlie Bowdre, William McCloskey, John Middleton, Frank McNab, Henry Brown, J.G.
