John VI Cantacuzenus:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
On the death of the emperor in 1341, Cantacuzenus was left regent, and guardian of his son John V Palaeologus, who was but nine years of age.
Cantacuzenus was far too ready to invoke the aid of foreigners in his European quarrels; and as he had no money to pay them, this gave them a ready pretext for seizing upon a European town.
Cantacuzenus retired to a monastery (where he assumed the name of Joasaph Christodulus) and occupied himself in literary labours.

John V Palaeologus (1332 - February 16, 1391) was the son of Andronicus III, whom he succeeded as Byzantine emperor in 1341.
At first he shared his sovereignty with his father's friend John VI Cantacuzenus, and after a quarrel with the latter was practically superseded by him for a number of years (1347-1355).
His reign was marked by the gradual dissolution of the imperial power through the rebellion of his son Andronicus IV and by the encroachments of the Ottomans, to whom in 1381 John acknowledged himself tributary, after a vain attempt to secure the help of the popes by submitting to the supremacy of the Roman Church.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hesychasm
John VI, Cantacuzenus (1341-1355), who gradually usurped the imperial power, first as rival, then as fellow-emperor, of Andronicus's son John V, Palæologus (1341-76), was always a friend of Palamas and the Hesychast monks.
It deposed the patriarch, John XIV, and excommunicated Akindynos.
Cantacuzenus then withdrew to Athos, became a monk himself, taking the name of Joasaph, and spent the rest of his life writing a history of his own times and contemplating the uncreated light.

John VI Cantacuzenus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
John Catacuzenus, as he was known to his contemporaries, was a leader of the highest order whose influence in Byzantine politics transcended the better part of the 14th century.
His son, now referred to as John V for the sake of imperial chronology, was just a kid and most would have preferred to make Cantacuzenus his regent, if not the outright emperor instead.
Numismatically, coins bearing the impression of Cantacuzenus cover most of the joint reign between him and John V. Those coins attributed to him alone were minted during the year or so that John V had renounced their joint reign and in which he was forced to become sole emperor by default.

Roman Emperors - DIR Manuel II
Manuel's father, Emperor John V (1341-1391), had to deal with the crossing of the Hellespont by the Turks, who first conquered Thrace and Macedonia and in 1389 at the battle of Kossovo destroyed and conquered the Serbian Empire.
In collaboration with Sultan Murad I (1362-89) John's son Andronicus IV staged a second coup in 1376 against his father and brother, who were incarcerated in the prison of the Anemas tower of the Blachernai palace, where Andronicus himself had previously been imprisoned.
When John V died in February 1391, after a reign of a half century, the possessions of the Byzantine Empire consisted only of the capital, some cities on the Sea of Marmara, some Aegean islands, and the Morea, which made up less than half of the Peloponnesus.

Nearly a century and a half later one Michael Ducas took a leading part in the civil war between the emperors John V. Palaeologus and John VI.
He was the author of a history of the period 13411462; his work thus continues that of Gregoras and Cantacuzene, and supplements Phrantzes and Chalcondyles.
There is a preliminary chapter of chronology from Adam to John Palaeologus I. Although barbarous in style, the history of Ducas is both judicious and trustworthy, and it is the most valuable source for the closing years of the Greek empire.

John Cantacuzene reigned as Byzantine emperor in Constantinople from 1347 to 1354.
A man of varied talents, as a scholar, soldier, statesman, theologian and monk, he was unique in being the only emperor to narrate the events of his own career.
It is a biography of a much maligned man who had a hope, however naive, of coming to terms with the emerging Muslim world of Asia and of winning the co-operation of western Christendom without compromising the Orthodox faith of the Byzantine tradition.

Innocent VI, né Stephen Aubert (1282 - September 12, 1362), pope at Avignon from 1352 to 1362, the successor of Clement VI, was a native of the diocese of Limoges, and, after having taught civil law at Toulouse, became bishop successively of Noyon and of Clermont.
On the death of Clement VI, after the cardinals had each bound himself by a solemn agreement as to a particular line of policy should he be elected, Aubert was chosen (December 18, 1352); one of the first acts of his pontificate was to declare the paction to have been illegal and null.
During this pontificate also John Palaeologus offered to submit the Greek church to the Roman see on condition of assistance being rendered him against John Cantacuzenus.
