So after John Van Zandt was charged with violating the Fugitive Slave Act by using his home for a stop on the Underground Railroad, a board of ministers promptly excommunicated him from the United Methodist Church.
Van Zandt had been a founder and trustee of his Sharonville, OH church, but when his community and government learned of his work as an abolitionist, his friends and congregants turned against him.
John Van Zandt's ethics now seem to be ahead of their time, and the church decided to address its past wrong.
