Vanbiesbrouck was expected to miss the first several months of the 1988-89 season but made an amazingly quick recovery and was able to play in N.Y. Rangers' season opener on Oct. 6, 1988.
Vanbiesbrouck was utterly disgraced by the incident, which prompted a $50,000 fine against the Greyhounds, the largest financial punishment in OHL history.
In addition, Vanbiesbrouck was banned from coaching or working as a general manager in the league.
