Varrone began his law enforcement career in 1977 as a Customs Patrol Officer in the New York Office of Enforcement where he worked on a variety of airport, seaport and tactical assignments.
In February 2000, Varrone began serving as the Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Investigations and on July 28 was appointed Assistant Commissioner, Office of Investigations.
Varrone received a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in public administration from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Varrone said 79 percent of all narcotics seizures by the Customs Service in fiscal year 2000 occurred at the southwest border.
Varrone also said about 14 percent of the heroin seized in the United States comes from Mexico, while 35 percent of the methamphetamines seized by Customs was identified as having been produced in Mexico.
Varrone said his agency is focusing on improved coordination of federal interdiction efforts as well as better use of advanced technology, effective intelligence gathering, and investigative operations to combat the drug threat along the southwest border.

I first met guitarist/vocalist Chris Smith through mutual friend John Varrone whom, at the time, I was playing in the Hot Buttered Elves with.
Me and John were invited to a party at Smith's dad's house in April, 1997 where local hardcore/metal band Nitrous Oxide were giving a private show.
The following month me and John got together with Smith a couple more times in hopes of getting him to sing for the Hot Buttered Elves (who were looking for a singer at the time).

Intially the group consisted of Sam Jungeblut on vocals, Jean Sandoval (later of Hot Soup and the Garrison Project) on guitar, Vedran Mehinovic on keys, John Varrone on bass and me on drums.

Two men were arrested Wednesday after they allegedly attempted to smuggle 35 pounds of heroin concealed in leather purses, U.S. Customs officials said.
Inspectors at John F. Kennedy International Airport seized 12 crates of handbags that arrived January 11 from Caracas, Venezuela, and discovered the heroin in the cardboard linings of 90 handbags.
In this method, clothes are specially prepared and impregnated with liquid heroin, which smugglers extract after the clothes arrive in the United States, Varrone said.
