 Legend of John McGaffey's Gold
John McGaffey was foresighted enough to realize that Sabine Pass would eventually become the shipping terminus for a vast cotton commerce floated south along the Neches and Sabine waterways.
John then gave her verbal directions to the sites, but she paid little heed to his words, being otherwise engrossed at that moment with a sick child.
For decades an intermittent search for John McGaffey's gold continued, at first by her children and grandchildren, and finally by total strangers who brought divining rods, mining compasses, and other strange detecting devices which were used in the pursuit of buried treasure.

 LEGAL AUTHORITY/CAPACITY OF PARTIES/HERNDON CLAIM
By September 1989, Veatch gained the upper hand in the litigation by having entered into a contract to purchase another, adjacent parcel, which was essential to provide access for the Ehrich Parcel.
The problem was that the deed into Veatch, received as part of the three-party litigation, vested title to the Ehrich Parcel in "John W. Veatch, Trustee," whereas Veatch executed the insured deed of trust as an individual ("John W. Veatch").
In January 1997, the trustee 'signed on,' and Veatch's Chapter 7 bankruptcy was re-opened to administer the "missed" asset, which was Veatch's interest in the trust that owned the Ehrich Parcel when Veatch's bankruptcy was commenced in 1992.
