John David Waihee III was the first American of Native Hawaiian descent to be elected governor in the United States.
Waihee started his political career as a delegate to the 1978 Hawaii State Constitutional Convention where he was instrumental in the creation of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the adoption of the Hawaiian language as an official language of the state.
Waihee was elected Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii under Governor George R. Ariyoshi, serving in that capacity until 1986.

Meanwhile, a day after saying John Waihee would run in the Nov. 30 special election to fill the remainder of Mink's term, a spokesman said the former governor now is urging Mink's husband, John, to seek the post.
In a statement issued by Hirano's office today, Waihee said he believes John Mink should be elected to fill the remainder of his wife's term.
John Mink, who also was his wife's campaign manager, has made no public statements since her death.

According to a foreclosure lawsuit filed by Bank of Hawaii, Waihee and his wife, Lynne, still owe more than 800-thousand dollars on the first and second mortgages on the Nuuanu home they purchased after the former politician completed his second term in 1994.
Waihee was out of town and not immediately available for comment.

Hard economic times and tough negotiations worked against former Gov. George Ariyoshi's enjoying the same clout Burns had with unions, but when John Waihee became governor there was much more money to go around and Waihee found himself a popular labor governor.
Waihee also worked hard to court labor and to see things through labor's eyes, a vision that was lost when Ben Cayetano became governor.

In 1991, Lynne Waihee and Jack Tsui of the Bank of Hawaii raised $1.1 million of private money and combined it with a $400,000 legislative appropriation to create a $1.5 million endowment for a family literacy trust fund.
It was housed in the Office of the State Librarian's Literacy and Lifelong Learning Program.
