My view: 'The Complete John Waite, Volume One: Falling Backwards' by John Waite - The Honolulu Advertiser - Hawaii's ...
My take: Starting in the 1970s, John Waite made a name for himself in the music industry by switching between lead-singer duties in two short-lived bands (The Babys and Bad English) and furthering his solo career, which is still going today, although not as strongly as in previous decades.
"Falling Backwards" tries to summarize Waite's earlier career by compiling his best work from all three eras, a task made easier as Waite is the executive producer of the album.
Waite's career carried on long after the era this album encompasses, and Waite's late-coming listeners will benefit by purchasing this album as a breezy retrospective.

Rough Edge: John Waite CD Reviews
There's no overstating it: "Figure In A Landscape," the third solo album released by John Waite since the demise of 'supergroup' Bad English in the early '90s, is a diverse, highly melodic, and breathtakingly eloquent work of modern art that finds the veteran singer/songwriter at the top of his game.
For Waite, that meant not only more laser-like lyrical introspection, but also drawing more from his bluesy, folksy, Appalachian-flavored "roots" with the two 90s era solo offerings (come what may of his "commercial" validity).
Although, depending on the breadth of the musical taste of the listener, it might be criticized for being almost too stylistically diverse, this whole album still has the unmistakable stamp of John Waite in all his authentic versatility.

It's the sound of stylized, commercial mainstream rock in the early '80s, and the rest of Ignition follows this pattern to an appealing end.
The problem is that no matter how well-crafted Ignition is, none of its songs are total knockouts -- the kind of single that would break down the doors to mainstream radio, regardless of whether it was given a push.

With the prototypical working-class (Northern) Englishman's humility, John Waite still thinks of himself as an "underground" artist.
Still, it probably shouldn't be a huge surprise that John Waite -- who has himself observed, "I've been the long way around" -- would eventually come up with an album (and song) entitled The Hard Way due out in stores September 21st.
I remember you saying that people who knew you well were kind of surprised that you took that on, because of your commitment to your solo career -- and especially because you had to go back and get as familiar with the bass again as you possibly could.
