 Re: GRIDLEY 18?? photo, CA
John Abel Gridley seems to have moved back and forth between Jackson County Oregon and Tehama County until his wife's death in 1894 in Jackson County...
The Wallace Augustus Gridley family was related to the George W. Gridley family (of the "Gridley, CA" Gridleys"...
So, it is also possible that this is John Abel Gridley (born in Illinois, moved to Oregon, moved to California) and that he was visiting in Gridley.

Support for Wallace Campaign   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Wallace and Scottish history should be given a higher profile in Scottish schools to breed national pride of Scotland first and foremost.
God only knows whether William Wallace was a Saint, but his example of selfless passion for the freedom of his people, and their posterity, is something so magnificent that he might just as well be revered as a Saint.
The abhorent way William Wallace was brutally killed by a so called king in an act of revenge and to try and prevent a nation from demanding her freedom failed miserably.

 The Wallace: Selections: Introduction
Wallace, "the flour of armys" (6.56), is almost invariably chivalrous in his treatment of noncombatants, and we are repeatedly told that he refused to harm women, children, and priests.
Wallace may show little respect for an English bishop, but his devoutness is nevertheless illustrated a number of times in the poem when he attends mass, offers up prayers, and finally endures torture by steadfastly reading the psalter he has, we are told, kept on his person since childhood.

 John Love Papers
After graduating fourteenth in the class of 1841, a class that produced twenty Civil War generals, John Love was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of the 1st Dragoons and sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, under the command of Capt. Philip St. George Cooke.
Love was fascinated with the psychological gamesmanship of both tribes, for instance the boisterous arrival of the Chippewa with guns blazing in the air to frighten the Sioux and their rowdy talk upon dismounting.
Linton claims that she cannot feel love: "were you in my place you would go right to work to winning his affections instead of concealing those points of character which would make a gentleman apt to fall in love with a fairy.

Graduating from Columbia, where he had studied with Ralph Linton, Franz Boas, and Ruth Benedict, Hoebel early became a scholar on the legal cultures of the Plains Indians, including the Comanches and Cheyennes.
Llewellyn, a legal realist who believed that the heart of law is in how a society actually handles disputes rather than in written legal codes per se, was interested in Hoebel's ideas and agreed to serve as his advisor.
Hoebel did field research on Comanche legal systems at the Santa Fe Laboratory of Anthropology (Ralph Linton, director), and his dissertation findings were published in an article titled "The Political Organization and Law-ways of the Comanche Indians." In 1934, Hoebel received his PhD degree in anthropology.
