Oxford Figures - About : The Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford
The Savilian astronomy professor David Gregory opened his inaugural lecture on 21 April 1692 with tributes to Sir Henry Savile, to his new colleague John Wallis, `the prince of geometers', and to Edward Bernard whom he succeeded, and highly praised his predecessors Seth Ward and Christopher Wren.
The memory lives on in the Oxford of today not only of the medieval Oxford Schools, but also of the great flourishing of seventeenth-century mathematical science and, above all, John Wallis whose name has, since 1969, been commemorated in a named Chair of mathematics.
We are justly proud of the names of Wallis and Briggs; at a subsequent period we claim those of Boyle, Wren, and Gregory, of Halley, Stirling, and Bradley; while, in still later times, we boast a Horsley and a Robertson.

The Tablet - The International Catholic Weekly
Lucas's successor was also a convert, this time from Anglicanism, the 34-year-old John Wallis who had been called to the Bar in 1847.
Wallis was on good terms with Cardinal Wiseman, and the paper remained a semi-official forum for publication of papal documents.
But when they were declared bankrupt in 1841 Lucas went into partnership with his Protestant printer, John Cox, who already printed pamphlets for a number of Catholic organisations.

Reading Group Guide AN INSTANCE OF THE FINGERPOST by Iain Pears
Sarah Blundy, for example, is far more a social pariah than, say, John Wallis, whom Pears has portrayed as a homosexual, or, for that matter, Marco da Cola, who's not only not English, but Catholic as well.
If you consult the Dramatis Personae at the end of the book, you'll discover that many of An Instance of the Fingerpost's characters (such as John Wallis, Anthony Wood, Robert Boyle, and Richard Lower) are actual historical figures, while others (such as Marco da Cola, Jack Prestcott, and Sarah Blundy) are fictionalized.
Nowadays, we often tend to conceive of prejudice in ethnic or racial terms, but in the world of An Instance of the Fingerpost, one's trustworthiness and social worth is decided by family history.
