Wardle describes the house as a place that can be "unpacked" on arrival and "repacked" on departure, as though the house itself reflects the joy of happily unpacking the tote bag, thrown in the back of the car for the weekend away.
Wardle also manipulates the section, so as a result of a rising skillion, one end becomes two storeys; the ground floor as garage.
Wardle's design is a simple frame and beam system that utilises stud framing so that 'the local builder could construct it'.

DesignInc in partnership with John Wardle Architects has won the prestigious RAIA Sir Zelman Cowan for Public Buildings, at the 2002 National Architecture Awards held in Sydney last night.
John Williams, Project Director and Principal of DesignInc commented that, “We are totally elated at receiving public and industry recognition for a building that we believe sets a new benchmark for tertiary education research buildings.
The jury consisted of John Denton of Denton Corker Marshall, architect Wendy Lewin, Peter Dungey of Planning SA in Adelaide, critic Joe Rollo and was chaired by architect Ed Haysom.

Following a major international design competition, FJMT has been selected as the architect of the new $85 million faculty of law Building and Wardle and its associates will design the $50 million student services building USYD Central.
The buildings are part of the university's five-year capital development plan, titled Campus 2010 and Building for the Future the university's biggest construction program since it was founded in the 1850s.

Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale said the 40 design concepts received from architects worldwide were short-listed after the jury panel gathered in Perth recently for the first stage of the international design competition CentreStage.
Ms McHale said the firms invited to proceed to Stage Two of the competition included designers of Sydney Theatre, Singapore’s theatre complex and the Sydney Opera House refurbishment.
“Architects outside WA were encouraged to enter the competition in collaboration with a local architect or firm, forming a partnership, joint venture or consortium with architects licensed to practise here,” the Minister said.
