John was born in the industrial town of Halifax, West Yorkshire, England.
John decided that building with cordwood was the only alternative to high mortgages for poor housing.
People were starting to take notice of this exceptional building method and soon John was being approached by people wanting to be taught how to build their own cordwood home.

 The Haunted House Was Born
Gloomy wood was the brainchild of John Wardley; he wanted to create a dark ride that was unlike anything else seen in the UK.
John Wardley enlisted the help of Keith Sparks Company to help create and develop his own ideas, to create a monster of a ride.
Initially the cemetery was an area that John Wardley didn’t want to include, but thankfully the cemetery idea won through and the first area of the ride was conceived.

The old workings at Wardley were sealed off by 6 feet of concrete at the 1280 seam to prevent flooding, a pressure release valve ran through it which was used to drain away the build up behind the plug.

John is probably most famous for his latest work at Alton Towers creating Oblivion and Nemesis and for 2002 AIR (SW5), but he also has completed other work for Alton Towers, Chessington, and Oakwood Park in the UK.
John was impressed by the animatronic figures that he had seen on visits to the Disney theme park in America and wished to use the technology, but the cost was prohibitive, assuming Disney would even consider selling the technology.
John was convinced a complete makeover was the only option, using heavily themed areas to house a show piece ride that was then linked in with smaller attractions, shops and food outlets.

The photos show the tunnel which the coaster dives through, the station showing the theme coming together pretty well as well as shots inside the station showing the dual tracks.

As for the AIR pics, it's nice how John Wardley always presents us with a new perspective on a ride (not difficult considering his position, I know, but still good of him!)  The thing I like about this set of photographs is they really show how tall and impressive the station is.

In 1264 Prior Hugh de Darlington “built at Wardley a hall, a court and a chapel, which the Scots later destroyed.” On the site was built the Manor house of Wardley which was enclosed by a deep fosse with an earthen mound on the outer side.
Wardley Hall (now the British Legion Club) was built as his home in 1873 on top of a hill (Palmers Bank) with access to Sunderland Road.
Wardley Colliery which had been use as a man riding shaft and had pit baths, new canteens offices etc. built in 1958 was one of the many pits to close in the Northern coal fields in the 1960s and it saw its last working days in 1969.

It is amazing that he was able to get this many built during the Depression, a time when most coasters were torn down for their wood and steel.
I cannot begin to emphasize the importance John Miller had on the spread of the roller coaster and the amusement park.
Also, I think it is a disservice to great designers like John Miller and Herb Schmeck to say that their rides were designed and run dangerously.

Looks as if Gloomy Wood is about to see more development as coaster designer John Wardley has been seen with a group of people trudging around the area with notebooks in hand.
Also Rumors of the woodie are starting up again even after John Wardley said that it would not be the right time just yet to install one.
