Pacific Overtures - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pacific Overtures was an ambitious 1976 musical by Stephen Sondheim, with a libretto by John Weidman, and additional material by Hugh Wheeler, set in 1853 Japan.
Weidman wrote an underrated libretto, telling the massive story from the points of view of two Japanese men, a samurai and a fisherman.
The title of the play is ironic, nodding toward "overture" as a musical form, and archly noting that the initiatives of the Western powers for commercial exploitation of the Pacific nation were anything but pacific overtures.

 Aisle Say (NY): ASSASSINS
Well, this is more like it, and isn’t it interesting—the "it" being the groundswell of mainstream acceptance for the John Weidman/Stephen Sondheim musical "Assassins", whose subject matter, as advertised, is derived from the stories of successful and would-be presidential assassins.
Those of you with good ears and an affinity for Sondheim’s musical gamesmanship will "note" that subtly, underneath a variegated palate, every tune in the score is based on a perversion of "Hail to the Chief." And it informs a darker American voice that will not be stilled.
Weidman’s book, in which the various gun toters alternately play out scenes from their lives and intermingle with each other, unfettered by the logic of time and chronology.

This conduct by Sondheim and Weidman conforms with the understanding among all of the parties that the negotiations for a final production agreement would recommence when the re-writing of the play was completed.
If that was Sondheim and Weidman's view, their conduct was fraudulent in the extreme, and I certainly relied on that fraudulent conduct.

 Theater Review: Assassins
In a genre mostly concerned with flashy choreography, expensive special effects, and saccharin plots and melodies, Stephen Sondheim is one of the few composers who continues to write musicals that treat an adult audience as adults, and challenge them to think and react in an active rather than passive manner.
And only Sondheim and Weidman would be able to pull it off such that the result is a stirring and completely fascinating surreal tragicomedy as hilarious as it is chilling.
Sondheim and Weidman's show doesn't glorify assassination by proposing it as a solution to one's problems, but rather shows us that something is dreadfully wrong with a country that has such a long and bloody history of assassins.

Weidman's book is structured as a sort of music hall entertainment, with the events framed by a sideshow setting in which a menacing Proprietor (Marc Kudisch) runs a carnival game inviting the various nefarious figures to "c'mon and shoot a president...you can get the prize." The rogues gallery includes eight would-be or successful assassins.
The show is composed of a series of vaudeville-style sketches and numbers, ranging from the serious to the farcical, exploring the minds and motivations of the grotesque figures on display.
But too often, Weidman's book is content to settle for easy laughs, as in such scenes as a lengthy encounter between a bumbling Fromme and Moore in which they bond while shooting a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The idea was largely that of original director Harold Prince, who brought in Sondheim to musicalize Weidman's play (his first), hired Hugh Wheeler to doctor the book and came up with the concept of a Kabuki musical.
This is a musical about commercial diplomacy a century and a half ago, Commodore Perry's 1853 "pacific overtures" (backed by four gunboats) that opened imperial Japan to international trade after 250 years of self-imposed isolation.
It works in large part because of Sondheim and Weidman's vivid focus on a few key incidents and skill in creating characters to embody them.

Thirteen years ago in its initial incarnation at off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons, this creation of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman was an extraordinary, unsettling piece of musical theater.
In "Assassins," Weidman and Sondheim present a cavalcade of misfits, the desperate and the disaffected who killed or tried to kill the president of the United States.
Weidman's book follows a revuelike format as it travels along a disjointed path of American history.
