Topic: John Wheelwright

  John Wheelwright's Life and Career
Wheelwright states that the basic "enigma" in life is the relationship of the individual to the rest of humankind.
Wheelwright's several poems against the threat of a second world war indicate that his socialist views were not based on mere sentimental feelings; they stemmed from an understanding of the class basis of war.
A striking example of Wheelwright's limitations as a theorist is his consistent policy of calling putatively apolitical poetry "nihilist." In contrast to those who correlate this type of writing with the interest of the ruling class, Wheelwright's approach seems less mechanical and sectarian; yet it is indicative of a hesitancy to pursue the issue thoroughly.

 Theology Today - Vol 46, No. 4 - January 1990 - BOOK REVIEW - A Prayer for Owen Meany
Irving has Wheelwright conduct his long conversational narrative in a style so pedestrian that it includes the texts of favorite hymns and is interspersed with quotations from the Bible.
An Anglican "convert," Wheelwright ends up being a nondescript parishoner of "Grace Church-on-the Hill." His Owen Meany-inspired struggle to believe in God is bounded by the comfortable neighborhood between Upper Canada College and the St. Clair Reservoir, where he likes to walk his dog.
It would be inappropriate, of course, to confuse John Wheelwright with John Irving, but the two seem to be enough alike to prevent one from writing off either of them as a religious kook.
