Topic: John White (squash player)

Squash (sport) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Squash is an indoor racquet sport which was, until recently, called "Squash Rackets", a reference to the 'squashable' soft ball used in the game (compared with the harder ball used in its parent game Racquets or Rackets--see below).
Highly-skilled players often attempt to finish rallies by hitting the ball at an angle onto the front wall and into an area known as the 'nick' (the junction between the side wall and floor) which if done properly will cause the ball to roll out along the floor and be unreturnable.
Squash now has a universal appeal, as there are courts in 148 countries in the world from Argentina to Zambia.

All White's angles were on display and he seemed to play within himself and with help from his opponent ran up hands of 9 unanswered points in the third and 10 in the fourth to run out a comfortable winner.
White hit his angles easily a corkscrew rolling down the back wall, a stinging kill off the back and a narrow crosscourt on the inside of his opponent on match ball that Beng Hee could only look at sheepishly and then hold out his hand.
White has started this tournament well, "I have put in some serious fitness work and I was quite confident to let the rallies go on and wait for the right ball," he said.

White’s outraged response to that letter nearly two years ago was an indication of just how firmly he was committed to Scotland.

Likening squash player's abilities and attributes to football teams may be a good way to assess an individual players attributes on how successful or, otherwise, they are as effective squash players.
Most players have specific strengths; however, to win matches they have to use their strengths to nullify their opponent's strengths sufficiently to enable them to achieve that win.
Players are seldom praised for having an outstanding skill without the addendum "if only they had the "missing skills?" Players like Peter Nicol are the best in the world by relying 90% on his "best skill", his ability to defend.
