"THE Absurd Uncle John and Whitelock in Black and White" was how they once titled one of their art-blues happenings, the one in question being conducted at the ICA in London.
Appropriately enough, this near sold-out first gig of the year on home turf was a chance for the quintet to get some practice in before a return visit to the capital venue this week as special guests of Mogwai.
The band's originators, the titular Uncle John and Whitelock - aka vocalist and guitarist Jacob Lovatt and bassist Raydale Dower - arguably lend most of this atmosphere, with Lovatt in particular offering a grizzled vocal which places him with such rough-diamond heroes as Dr John, Tom Waits and Nick Cave.

Edinburgh Evening News - Features - True originals jump aboard the Subway
There have already been murmurs in the national music press about their ironically po-faced, blues-rocking sound, but words find it hard to express just how individual this lot are.
Studiously cultivating their own self-image with mysterious rock star pseudonyms (Uncle John’s the vocalist, Whitelock’s the bassist, Hashfinger, Ovalbody and Snake Eyes form the rest of the band), UJ&W revel in their murky stew of reference points, so much so that Uncle John adopts an unconvincing Southern drawl for his brief rants and song introductions.
Amidst an artfully-played, solo-ridden backdrop, John’s vocal is two parts Jon Spencer’s forlorn shriek to one part gravel-voiced John Lee Hooker, with a definite rockabilly tone that’s in keeping with his uniform of turn-ups and severe haircut.
