Pickersgill was called "Pick the politician," "the Jumping Jack," the "Commons Comic" and even "the Penguin" for his puffed-out his chest and rocking on his feet.
Born in 1905 in Wyecombe Ont., Pickersgill was raised on a Manitoba farm.
Pickersgill remained with King until he retired and has been widely credited with developing the concept of the family allowance scheme; playing a leading role in the negotiations that brought Newfoundland into Confederation; and in developing the reconstruction program of post-war Canada.

On the other hand, Pickersgill recalled, "some ministers were restrained by the fear of appearing ill-informed or ineffective." St-Laurent was fortunate that his principal English-speaking colleague, Howe, had no leadership ambitions.
In August, Pickersgill visited him there: "He was obviously deeply depressed, could not be drawn into conversation, and clearly had no interest in his new role." St-Laurent's family now took a hand.
Pickersgill was clerk of the Privy Council and later a minister under St-Laurent, and he kept up an acquaintance with him until the latter's death.

COYNE's son John divides the progression of his father's Alzheimer's into three stages, beginning in the early 1990s when his mother became alarmed at his father's forgetfulness.
COYNE himself knew something was amiss, "but it was one of those things he didn't want to talk about," his son says, explaining that silence is one of the concomitant tragedies of this "terrible affliction." The third stage came when the children realized their father was seriously impaired.
