Willard's hope is that the area be developed enough economically—through a mix of tourism; healthy, controlled development; and managed timbercutting—that people could have a good life and good schools.
Willard believes that the presently undeveloped shoreline should be protected by the state and that "lake-shore development be kept to certain areas, namely Greenville and Jackman [50 miles north]," he says.

John Toland, 91, the author and historian who wrote a best-selling biography of Adolf Hitler and won a Pulitzer Prize for his description of the Japanese Empire in the 1930s and '40s and the events that led it into war against the United States, died of pneumonia Jan. 4 at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut.
Toland wrote, "he would undoubtedly have gone down as one of the greatest figures in German history." He unified Germany, brought about a Nazi New Deal, persuaded Ferdinand Porsche to design a people's car that became the Volkswagen, and ordered factories in the Rhur to install antipollution devices.
John Toland was born in La Crosse, Wis. He graduated from Williams College, attended Yale Drama School and served six years in the Army Air Forces.

Emma Willard 1787–1870, American educator, pioneer in woman's education, b.
Emma Hart in Berlin, Conn. She attended and later taught in the local academy and in 1807 took charge of the Female Academy at Middlebury, Vt. Two years later she married Dr. John Willard.
She wrote a number of textbooks, a journal of her trip abroad in 1830, and a volume of poems, including "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep." In 1838 Willard retired from active management of the school, which was later renamed in her honor.
