King John's father, King Henry II, was the founder of the Angevin dynasty which ruled England from 1154 to 1485.
King John is certainly not one of Shakespeare's best written history plays and the character development is not nearly as strong as some of the others.
While the character of King John never truly comes to life and leaves far less of a lasting imppression than Shakespeare's versions of Henry IV and Richard III, it nonetheless is well worth reading to have a view into the era, and Shakespeare's development in this genre.

william tucker drawings by david cohen
The sculpture William Tucker has produced since the mid-1980s, when his art underwent a radical transformation, might almost be read as a conscious simultaneous rebuttal of two extremes: the ultra-opticalism represented by Greenberg and the anti-material, anti-fetish stance of conceptual art (which is antagonistic towards all sensuality, perceptual or otherwise).
Closer examination of the transition in Tucker’s career begins to reveal all sorts of anticipations in the earlier work of the switch to come, however, as this early work turns out not to have subscribed, after all, to the orthodox Greenbergian formalism that might have been assumed.

Based on Chaucer's Knight's Tale, The Two Noble Kinsmen was written at the end of Shakespeare's career, as a collaboration with the rising young dramatist John Fletcher.
Of the play's 23 scenes, 7 and part of an 8th are attributed to Shakespeare, a 9th doubtfully so, and the rest to John Fletcher, who was probably handed over to Shakespeare to learn the ropes as it were.
