William Gilbert was born in 1544 in Colchester, England, into a middle class family of some wealth.
William Gilbert entered St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1558 and obtained an B.A. in 1561, an M.A. in 1564, and finally an M.D. in 1569.
William Gilbert died on 30 November 1603 and was buried in Holy Trinity, an Anglican church, in Colchester where a monument was erected to his memory.

John was the son of Gilbert, the marshal of the royal household of King Henry I. The office of the marshal was part of the Curia, with a deputy in the Exchequer and one in the King's Bench, as well as one in the Court of the Marshalsea of the King's household.
John fitz Gilbert’s second son, William Marshal, would inherit nothing tangible from his father, but he would be heir to his father’s standing in respect to the confidence and favor of King Henry II.
William might have inherited some of the physical strength and knowledge of military strategy from his father, but as a second son, he would become in his own right and by his own abilities, skills, and sense of honour the best of chivalric knighthood, a "familiaris Regis," the Earl of Pembroke and regent of England.

It is not at all likely that William Ficklin would have leased a tract of ground for as long a term as fourteen years unless he had previously resided in that region for several years and was thoroughly acquainted with the possibilities of the land he was leasing.
John's older brother, Thomas, was the head of a family in 1772 (Spottsylvania records­deed from Spottswood to Ficklin, 15 Sept., 1772) and was probably born about 1750.

John Gilbert was working as a stockman at Marengo in about 1860, when he became associated with Frank Gardiner in bushranging activity around the Lachlan Valley.
Hall was ambushed and shot by police near Goobang Creek outside Forbes on 5 May. Gilbert and Dunn were outlawed on 10 May and three days later Gilbert was shot dead at Binalong by Constable John Bright.
John Dunn was captured by police on Tonamba station near Coonamble in December.

William Gilbert Gosling was born on 8 September 1863 at Paget, Bermuda, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Gilbert) Gosling.
On 22 June 1881 he came to St. John's to work as a clerk with the fish exporting firm of Harvey and Co., whose owners had had long commercial and family connections with Bermuda.
In his deliberations, he was greatly influenced by the municipal reform movements in Canada and the United States and their emphases on administrative efficiency and social improvement.
