John Ruskin (February 8, 1819 - January 20, 1900) was an English author, poet and artist, although more famous for his work as art critic and social critic.
He was educated at the University of Oxford (Christ Church), where he was awarded a prize for poetry, his earliest interest.
Upon the death of his father (who was a wealthy wine merchant), Ruskin declared that it was not possible to be a rich socialist and gave away most of his inheritance to educational organizations including the George's Guild in Paddington, the Whitelands College in Chelsea and the John Ruskin School in Camberwell.

The play was also influenced by Geoffrey Chaucer's love poem Troilus and Criseyde, although Shakespeare's treatment of the lovers and his attitude toward their dilemma is in sharp contrast with Chaucer's.
Charged with the task of restoring a magnificent library destroyed by the war, Inchbold moves between Prague and the Tower Bridge in London, his fortunes-and his life-hanging on his ability to recover a missing manuscript.
Inchbold's adventure is compelling from beginning to end as Ross King vividly recreates the turmoil of Europe in the seventeenth century-the sacks of great cities; Raleigh's final voyage; the quest for occult knowledge; and a watery escape from three mysterious horsemen.

 handprint : victorian watercolors
A more impressionistic painter in the landscape tradition was John William Inchbold (1830-1888), who received some instruction in drawing in his native Leeds before moving to London to study color lithography with Louis Haghe; he entered the Royal Academy schools in 1847, and exhibited watercolors at the Society of British Artists.
In the 1850's he was an oil painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelites and mentored by John Ruskin, with a style that resembles J.M.W. Turner's atmospheric paintings of the 1820's.
Inchbold's paintings from this period are intensely felt and free in technique, with a boldly calligraphic brush style that creates an impression of accurate observation, and rich contrasts of thick gouache color and texture laid over a foundation of transparent watercolor washes.
