Tennessee’s accomplishments on the battlefield during the Creek War (1813-1814) gave the country something to cheer about in a period of otherwise dismal campaigns against the British.
Williams organized a regiment of East Tennesseans to join the Georgia troops in an undertaking that, on the surface, was designed to track down marauding Creek and Seminole Indians based in East Florida.

The census of 1826 classified Williams as a farmer and stock raiser with a wife, Anna, aged between sixteen and twenty-five, four servants, and eleven slaves.
In December 1835 Williams was among the commissioners appointed to investigate the recapture of the schooner Hannah Elizabeth and its cargo, but he did not act in the case.
Williams apparently took little interest in politics during his later years, preferring instead to concentrate on his plantation, which by 1850 had around fifty-three slaves and was very prosperous until the Civil War.

James L. de Jongh, a contributor to the Dictionary of Literary Biography, has said Williams is “arguably the finest Afro-American novelist of his generation,” although he "has been denied the full degree of support and acceptance some critics think his work deserves.” Williams believes part of the reason for this may be racial discrimination.
In 1961, for instance, he was awarded a grant to the American Academy in Rome based on the quality of his novel Night Song, but the grant was rescinded by the awarding panel, possibly because he was fl and because of rumors that he was about to marry a white woman, which he later did.

I consider Tennessee Williams to be the greatest voice in American theater.
He touched on themes of class and sexuality that no writers dared approach, and he did so with a style that comes across as effortless, though I'm sure it was anything but.
