Woodward requested work release in late August 2001, a fact he refuted at the hearing, claiming there was another John Woodward at the jail.

Apprenticed in 1804 to a manufacturer of camlets and bombazines, a taste for serious study was stimulated by his master, Alderman John Herring and by Joseph John Gurney.
His eldest son, Bernard Bolingbroke Woodward (1816-1869), was librarian and keeper of the prints and drawings at Windsor Castle from 1860 until his death.
The second son, Samuel Pickworth Woodward (1821-1865), became in 1845 professor of geology and natural history in the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, and in 1848 was appointed assistant in the department of geology and mineralogy in the British Museum.

John Woodward, a professor and physician at Cambridge University in the late 1600s, tried to design such an experiment as you have just done to test the hypothesis that water is the nutrient used by plants.
To control for evaporation, Woodward had placed parchment over a water solution (this was regular rainwater, containing considerable organic matter and various elements), which was to serve as the source of nutrient.
Woodward did not properly control the water since, as he notes, most of it goes through the pores of the plant and into the atmosphere.

 Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences | Exhibits - Woodward's Legacy
Over more than 35 years Woodward collected and catalogued nearly 10,000 specimens, not just of rocks fossils and minerals, but also shells, plants and archaeological artefacts from all over the world.
Woodward had five walnut cases specially made to house and display his collection.
In his Will, Woodward bequeathed his collection and two of the cabinets to the Sedgwick Museum (the University purchased the other two and a fifth was added in the 1840s), and from part of his remaining estate, funds to pay a salary to establish a lectureship in geology.

John Woodward, Texas consul in New York from 1836 to 1840, was a New York judge when he became interested in Texas lands as early as 1812.
On December 15, 1836, Woodward was appointed Texas consul general for the New York consulate, which embraced the ports of Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
Because of his land speculations he was the object of considerable criticism and on February 6, 1840, was dismissed as consul.
