InterChange Conference on Woolf's Between the Acts (7/3/00)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
I think by this Woolf is suggesting that although our "script" is already made out by the society and culture in which we are born, we have the ability to throw caution to the wind, to throw out the script we've been given and create our own.
I think Woolf's last novel has the unintended effect of pointing out the sadness of a predetermined life and the reader is therefore determined not to live his or her life in that manner.
I would agree with Laura that Woolf seems a pessimist, and also something I just noticed about Woolf's pessimism in all of her novels: Her characters are always regretting past descisions, unhappy with their circumastances, always afraid to embrace or create change, and usually conform to their stale societies with little resistance.

Article - John Woolf/Grant Whittaker, Rally Racing News
John Woolf and Grant Whittaker, both from New Zealand and both just 26 years old, died instantaneously when their rally car collided head-on with another vehicle.
Woolf and Whittaker made their first competition appearance in the U.S. in April of 1980, getting off to a fine start by winning the Golden West Rally in their Mazda RX-3.
Woolf had been given a green light to rebuild a similar car to his own specifications, and he set to work with customary enthusiasm.

 Dalkey Archive Press: Douglas Woolf
And like all of Woolf's cars, the Thunderhead is a "she," a domineering companion in Claude's cross-country picaresque "flight of passage." In Wall to Wall Woolf's view is evocative and is very much his own.
Woolf's work is single-minded in impulse--like Swift, a more obviously enraged but related ironist, he sets out to depict commonly ignored or denied principles of order.
Douglas Woolf leaves things up in the air because he hopes that the feeling will be truly mutual--that we will not only help guide them back to earth but also agree with him as to when and how to do so.

UAH Library Reserve List for EH 649 Virginia Woolf
King reads Woolf’s life as a response to her father’s influence, arguing that she “came to see that the forces which threatened her were masculine and could be fought against only by employing a new conception of the female self, on which had not been assimilated into male culture” (xviii).
Woolf’s letters make entertaining reading, and she often comments on what she is writing, or her ideas about writing.
Woolf often spoke of writing her autobiography, but these unpublished autobiographical writings are as close as we have to formal autobiography.

 CONTEXT: Issue No. 12
Woolf is not angry, or certainly not in the same way as Swift.
If I am persuaded that Douglas Woolf is neither a satirist nor an ironist primarily, it is because the worlds his various characters find themselves in are, each one, places which do not apply to any other world so simply.
It is Douglas Woolf 's immense and consistent acceptance of what he's been given, his fascination with what can be made of it, so that the salt left in a small bag of peanuts has use, the peels of an apple, and this is just where his story begins, always.

Since her death in 1941, Virginia Woolf has come to be recognized as one of the supreme prose writers of the twentieth century.
Virginia Woolf is honored today not only as a novelist and literary critic of the most varied gifts, but also as the author of A Room of One's Own, with little doubt the most brilliantly argued, witty, and persuasive exposition of the feminist standpoint in modern times.
John Lehmann, poet, critic, biographer, and editor, worked for many years with the Hogarth Press, the publishing firm founded by Leonard and Virginia Woolf in 1917.

Randall Woolf Looks at Women - by Mic Holwin
In tandem with an orchestral part, Woolf assembled an accompanying digital soundtrack created from some of his favorite women singers in genres from new wave and gospel to country and Renaissance madrigal.
What developed was a seamless flow of diverse images of women set to Woolf's yearning, driving, at times dark, at times buoyant music that integrates the emotional power of orchestra with the emotive power of women's voices (distilled by Woolf into a haunting, primordial essence).
Most striking are perfect moments when Woolf's music brings to life an image, like when the strings become inconsolable and we look into the desolate eyes of a woman whose pain we can only surmise from what surrounds her in the painting or photograph.
