Of his time in France, John later related in a humorous account that, when a woman wearing a daringly low-cut dress arrived at a reception which he was attending, the people assembled in the room did not watch the woman, but, rather, him to see if he was watching the woman.
After the long pontificate of John's patrician predecessor, the cardinals chose a man whom they presumed, because of his advanced age and personal modesty, would be a short "stop-gap" pope.
Pope John XXIII died of stomach cancer on June 3 1963, at the age of 81.

What is less understandable is that Leo XIII himself largely passes unnoticed, though his long pontificate was one of the most important of the modern period in terms of the depth and breadth of his teaching.
John Paul, in preparation for the Holy Year of 2000, would entrust the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a pious act that was replete with anti-Communist significance.
John Paul II brought to fruition these neglected aspects of Leo XIIFS thought, so that one can say that Leo and John Paul share an outlook that is unique and quite different from the one espoused by intervening popes.

I have searched for months for a good commentary on the Gospel of John and it looks like the search continues.
Another more recent study of John's Gospel is "The Good Wine" by Bernard Barnhart.
