Pope John XVII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John XVII (died November 6, 1003), born né Sicco, was a native of Rome who succeeded Pope Silvester II (999–1003) as Pope on June 13, 1003, but died less than five months later.
John XVII was nominated to the papacy by John Crescentius, a Roman noble who held power in the city in opposition to Emperor Otto III (983–1002).
John XVI (997–998) was an antipope, according to conventional wisdom, and thus his regnal number XVI should have been reused.

There had indeed been a man who called himself John XVI, but he was John Philagathus the unfortunate antipope set up by Crescentius II against Pope Gregory V. John XVII, therefore, should have been called John XVI.
The reason why John Sicco, who became Pope Sylvester's successor, was called John XVII is not hard to guess.
John XVII was buried in the Lateran Basilica.

 COMMENTARY ON 1 JOHN 2
THUS far John has treated sin as a reality, and has exposed the fallacies by which its repugnance to the character of God is concealed, and its significance is vainly done away by a false philosophy.
John was not visionary but sober in his endeavor to edify and purify the church.
At this point John turns from the ideal to the practical view of Christian truth and duty, the sum of which is "abide in Him," and give proof of it by your conduct.

Pope John XVIII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John XVIII (born at Rapagnano near Ascoli Piceno, died June or July 1009), born Fasanius, the son of a Roman priest named Leo, was Pope from 1004 to 1009.
During his whole pontificate he was allegedly subordinate to the head of the Crescentii clan who controlled Rome, the patricius (an aristocratic military leader) Johannes Crescentius III.
But some historians (perhaps due to the numbering of Pope John XXI), however, often called him Pope John XIX or "John XVIII (XIX)" due to the legend of another Pope John between Pope John XIV and the true Pope John XV (whom historians sometimes thus called XVI).
