John Xantus de Vesey (born János Xántus) (October 5, 1825 - December 13, 1894) was a Hungarian-born exile and American zoologist.
Trained as a lawyer, John Xantus (the aristocratic title de Vesey was an affectation, of which he had several variations) served as an officer in the nationalist uprisings of 1848 in the Hungarian Army.
He was captured and exiled to Prague, arrested again, and escaped to the United States via England.

The Xantus Hummingbirds radiate out from this valley in all directions, and are very common in all the mountain canyons, right down to the open deserts.
In their courting, the male Xantus Hummingbird does not fly up in the air and make the parabolic dive that the Costa Hummingbird does, but there is considerable chasing by individuals of one another around through the trees.
Xantus Hummingbirds were common from September to December at Todos Santos, some ninety miles north of San Jose del Cabo, on the Pacific Ocean.

The next botanist to collect specimens in Baja California was John Xantus de Vesey, who was employed by the U. Coast Survey and the Smithsonian Institution to make tidal observations and to collect natural history material in the Cape Region.
But, John Gillespie was prostrated by pneumonia following a very strenuous summer of study at Kew Gardens, and died at his parent's home in Georgia immediately after his return to the United States.
John J. Thornber died in Tucson, Arizona on November 22, 1962 at the age of ninety.

A native of Hungary, John Xantus (1825-1894) came to the United States in 1850.
In January 1859, Xantus was appointed tidal observer for the United States Coast Survey stationed at Cape San Lucas, Lower California, where he remained until August 1861.
After a short visit to Hungary, Xantus was appointed United States Consul at Manzanillo, Mexico, on November 25, 1862.
