John Watts Young (born September 24, 1930) is a former NASA astronaut who walked on the Moon on Apollo 16, April 21, 1972.
Young was assigned to the backup crew on Apollo 7 and later made the second manned flight to the Moon on Apollo 10 with Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan.
Young was back-up commander of Apollo 13, the troubled mission in which the moon landing was aborted because of an explosion on the service module.

Young was back-up Commander of Apollo 13 in which he had a central role in rescuing the crew by leading the team that devised the makeshift carbon dioxide filters and by rotation became Commander of Apollo 16.
On the surface Young - walking on the Moon at the with Charles Duke, while Ken Mattingly flew the command module in lunar orbit - set a speed record with the lunar rover but was also troubled by the effects of potassium in the orange juice that they drank during the EVA's.
Young was openly critical of the administration following the disaster, and in April 1987, he was taken out of the Astronaut Office and made special assistant of engineering, operations and safety to the centre director - it was denied that his criticism of NASA triggered the move.

Young's fifth flight was as Spacecraft Commander of STS-1, the first flight of the Space Shuttle, April 12-14, 1981, with Bob Crippen as Pilot.
Young's sixth flight was as Spacecraft Commander of STS-9, the first Spacelab mission, November 28-December 8, 1983, with Pilot Brewster Shaw, Mission Specialists Bob Parker and Owen Garriott, and Payload Specialists Byron Lichtenberg of the USA and Ulf Merbold of West Germany.
Young was also on five backup space flight crews: backup pilot in Gemini 6, backup command pilot for the second Apollo mission (before the Apollo Program fire) and Apollo 7, and backup spacecraft commander for Apollo 13 and 17.

Young orbited the moon in the Apollo Command Module, while his fellow crewmembers, Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan, descended to within 50,000 feet of its surface in the Lunar Module.
Young was at the helm of Columbia for the first Space Shuttle mission, STS-1 in 1981, with Robert Crippen as pilot.
Young's sixth and final space mission was again in command of Columbia on the ninth Shuttle flight, STS-9 in 1983.
